RAF Jets in 1/48

Post by reaper493 » Thu May 27, 2021 4:58 pm

When I got back in to Modelling last year, I started off with a LN F-15C and things progressed from there, quickly....

My first project I set my self was to build as many of the RAFs jets as possible.

I've not included the Javelin as it just doesn't appeal to me, nor the Buccaneer as I ain't paying 80+quid for it...

My question is, what types have I missed that are replicated in 1/48?

So far, I've built -

Meteor
2x Canberra B(I)6/PR9
2x Hunter
2x Gnat
Lightning
Phantom
Jaguar GR3
2x Hawk T1
Hawk T2
Tornado F3
2x Typhoon

And I've got 2x Tornado Gr4 and a Harrier Gr9 to build.

All I can think of is the newly released Sabre and the yet to be released Vampire, anyone have any more suggestions?

Cheers

Mike

Good list, I'm working my way through my old stash and new stuff too, enjoying it as well! What springs to mind is the earlier Harriers and Kinetic do, from what I hear, a pretty decent GR3 and a T4.

The Harrier T.4 is very good, Airfix Sabre is just out, the Airfix Meteor is only a couple of years old.
Try Hannants for decal options.

Yea I've used Hannants for a fair amount of Decals for variations.
The Meteor I built was the Airfix Fr.9 which looks fantastic, but was a real pain to fit together, might go for an F.8 if I can get a good priced one.

The kinetic Harrier looks fantastic, many many good schemes, I'll have a look and work out whether to get the T or Gr kit

Classic Airframes did a series of Vampires and Venoms single and 2 seat along with Meteors , PR T7 NF etc which all looked good when made :thumb:

Fly Jet Provost T3/5 ,

Sword Lightning T4/5

Kinetic Alpha Jet A

Good luck

Cheers

Mike, that's an impressive list of builds in just one year.
Have checked my Collection, and got a few more for you:

Airfix Canberras B.2 and B(I).8
Fly Jet Provost T.4
Airfix Jaguar GR.1/A
Kitty Hawk Jaguar GR.1/3
Kitty Hawk Jaguar T.2/4
Revell Phantoms FG.1 and FGR.2
ESCI F-4J as Phantom F.3
Trumpeter Vampire FB.5
Tamiya Meteor F.3

Airfix (Eduard) and Sword give the opportunity to build all 8x RAF Lightnings versions OOB, so you've some more to do yet! I've built eight so far including a Czech Master resin 'T.5 nose conversion job on an 'F.3 kit, just got an 'F.2A to build for the set (next year).

Surely you can't resist an Airfix TSR-2?

(And I know it's not a jet, but Valom made an RAF BN-2T Islander kit, which I know you will be familiar with at your local).
Not to mention the Airfix Chipmunk new release coming soon.

Thanks for your list Binbrook!!

I did enjoy building the Canberra's, will keep a look out for a B2/B(I)8.
The Jet provost is on the to do list after seeing some good examples on here, and the Chipmunk does look tempting despite not being a jet.

I'd forgotten about the TSR2!!
Although I hate painting white.... Haha.

Cheers, will put some shots up of the latest builds soon.

More like whats right with them , it was one of Kitty Hawks early efforts and along with the Gripen , SH-2 and Dauphin were very poor fit wise :( The first one of their Jags I built went in the bin , managed to get the second one together but was not an enjoyable build :(

On a side note saw this about Kitty Hawk / Panda today on Cybermodeller

While Squadron's relaunch under new ownership is good news, we also had some bad news over the weekend - Kitty Hawk / Panda Models has stopped development of new kits and have pulled their pages off of Facebook as well as the Chinese equivalent. They evidently have some remaining stock available, though I'm told that many of their popular kits are no longer available. As this is a recent development, it is unclear if this is permanent or what might happen with their molds. Stay tuned as we await further news. If you've been procrastinating on one or more Kitty Hawk/Panda Models acquisitions to your kit stash, now would be a good time to get them before you face the kit collector prices on eBay.

They had good ideas but poor execution in a lot of cases

Cheers

Paul

Shame about the Jags, had a few chances to get one at a good price at let it do each time...

I'm quite happy with what I've got so far, I think I'll add these on the RAF to do list....

Sword Lightning T4
Airfix Canberra T4 Ltd Ed
Revell Phantom FGR2 kit (built as a 111 or 43sqd FG.1)
Sword Meteor NF14
Airfix Sabre
Airfix Vampire when it arrives

I'm currently on with a Viggen and a U-2...

I've also got the following collection of Ten Spitfires to build (Mks - 1,2,5b,7,8,9,Fr14,16, Pr19, 22) and 4 Mustangs (mk3, P-51B, 2x P-51D)

I also would like to build this lot, - but these will have to wait for the house move!

F-15C Aggressor, F-16 Aggressor, A-10.

Mirage 2000, Mirage F1, Rafale.

F/A-18E, A4, A7, F-14.

Should see me through until next Christmas maybe? haha.

Cheers for you advice

Mike

I enjoyed the Airfix Javelin. Big model but went together well.
