RAF Sharkmouth Phantom

Post by Sparts99 » Fri May 15, 2020 10:21 am

If I can make decent progress with my re-awakened modelling hobby I want to do a 56 Sqn Phantom with sharkmouth markings like the first shot here.

viewtopic.php?f=18&t=189483

Is there a straight out the box 1/72 kit with the markings, or do I have to buy a kit and separate decal sheet? Any recommendations if so.

Thanks

theres a 1/72 Fujimi sharkmouth FGR2 but not the red tailed version, thats about it kit-wise afaik. Its possible to make a 56 shark mouth red tail Phantom without the crest on the tail by cobbling together a few sheets There is a shark mouth on Modeldecal set 73 but you'd have to cut the black outline from the edges and as for the serial numbers it depends on which letter you want but its do-able

Ok thanks for that. The Fujimi will fit the bill, the red tail is less important than the sharkmouth, is it a good kit? My skills aren't up to much yet, needs to be a good fit.

eDIT - Ah, I see its a discontinued kit?

The RAF shark mouth radome was seen on at least 3 Phantoms including XV420 andXV470. It was swapped between airframes and was modelled on the USN VF-111 Sundowners markings.

In terms of kits, if you are an inexperienced modeller, search out Fujimi FGR2 kit, the basic one includes the shark mouth, and steer clear of the new Airfix one as it’s not straightforward.

If you are stuck for a sharkmouth pm me as I have a lot of spare phantom decals -having made 200 + in1/72.

Thanks Iain. I've stumbled across the Revell 1/48 kit, as cheap or cheaper than any Fujimis I've found on line, all about £40.00.

The Revell kit is a re-box of the Hasegawa FGR.2; the decals were designed by Dick Ward of Modeldecal fame. Lovely kit and very good decals. Well worth £40 is these inflated times.
The 56 squadron one with the sharkmouth is XV470 (coded BD). Last I know she is one of the all-to few RAF Phantoms left, being at Akrotiri - unfortunately not on display.

A very nice kit indeed made many of them myself :thumb:

Nearly didnt get that scheme in the kit as Revell Germany only wanted RAFG markings ...Dick won the day

£40 or under I suppose is not bad in todays market...bring back Model Zone I bought a case of them..£9.99 each  All gone now , all I have left are 5 Sea Kings...same deal , that was the only reason to go to Basingstoke

Enjoy your build when you get it :thumb:

Cheers

Paul

The Revell 1/48 seem to be about £30, £10 cheaper than the Fujimi 1/72 hence the temptation.
