Vallejo model putty

Post by viper3111 » Sat May 22, 2010 3:09 pm

I was just wondering if any one has some experience with vallejo's model putty/filler. I saw it recently in one of my holiday bought model mags, and the reason it looks interesting is that it has a thin nozel aplicator. This seemed perfect for seems an joins so I have bought some from fleabay. Its not very expensive so I thought I would give it a try, so has any one tried it or uses it?

My son uses it Shaun and is delighted, as you guessed it can be applied direct using the dropped tip and smoothed with a damp finger, a damp cotton bud etc. and is easily sanded. I haven't used it yet myself but have every confidence in it as with most Vallejo products.

I bought a tube of the stuff a while back and don't really like it, although it depends on what you want it for. It's ok for filling around the front windscreens of a/c but that's about it. It doesn't set hard like Squadron Green/White but stays flexible, so great care needs to be taken when sanding. The nozzle is a good idea, unfortunately the contents aren't. Saying that it is handy to have in the modeling box, as you never know.

I must admit I do like my squadron green, but I thought I would give this stuff a go as I only intend using it for small seems etc. Speaking of the squadron stuff, what is the white like as ive not used it I only use the green.

The Squadron White is finer than the Green, and requires extra care when sanding as it sets softer. Although I have a tube of it I very rare use it. I'm a Green man myself and use it first choice all the time. I tend to mask off the areas that require filling as not to sand away too much surface details and apply the stuff using small putty knives.

This was the build of the Hellenic RF-4E

Found this pic of the F117 build, the panel lines are puttied over on the real a/c, so I used the Vallejo stuff to replicate this on the kit

Another thing I found with the Vallejo stuff is it's rather watery.

I have used this stuff for the first time on my CA project, and it does exactly what it says on the tube. It does dry a bit more 'rubbery' rather than rock hard like the squadron stuff. But it still sands easily and leaves a nice surface to paint over. The fine nozzle applicator is a god send as you use exactly the amount needed to fill cracks, without having all the excess. For the money and convenience I would say this is a nice product. :thumb:
