Wrecks and relics from a modelling perspective

Post by viper3111 » Wed Apr 14, 2010 5:43 pm

There is a discussion going on at the moment about possible surviving Stirling's which has got me thinking.

As the overall winner at telford last year was a JU-88 derelict crash site I thought it would be interesting to see/hear some of your opinions and/or pictures of relics for the purpose of building. So feel free to add anything about surviving aircraft rumours, sites or relics that may come in useful for builders.

I agree that this is an excellent idea - the so-called "A-1 lightning" is also an excellent example of this Genre along with these two which I took at our local show in November.

I realy love that lightning, I would have it in my front garden just as it is.
As I am now no longer considering my comp entry as a serious contender I am going down the route of creating a neglected museum piece. Reading how over weathering makes models look like wrecks and the fact I have never used a weathering wash this is probably a good idea/experiment.

The idea of a neglected museum exhibit is a great one, but I think it would take a lot of skill to get it right - the faded paint and markings, years worth of dirt, fogged transparencies, missing parts/panels and a base to match. The A-1 Lightning is perhaps the best I've seen but I think a plane which hasn't been vandalised but is in need of huge amounts of TLC would look great.

I dont claim to be anything like the standard here but hopefully by working with you guys and posting my builds here it will increase and record the progress of my skills as a modeler.
I have posted in the decal thread I am looking for low viz roundels and tail marks if anyone has any. I dont have any swaps but will pay.
Bought some Tamiya weather master yesterday on the way back from Elvington. I might try it out tonight. By the way I would recomend the model shop in York. It has everything and the owner is very nice and helpfull.

Does anybody have any diorams to share with us ?

Like Highland Sniper's diarama's. Nicely done.
And Viper's derelict Lightning is amazing - must have taken hours & hours to do.

I got my self some Revell weathering wash. I`m not sure what I was expecting but I was not expecting something that looks like a little makeup set. :P
I wanted the soot and rust but not sure what I will do with the snow. It seems Revell dont put all the good colours in one set. Makes sense for them I suppose :(
Shame they dont do a representative moss.

Come on everybody show us your wrecks or make one.

Ive not seen the revell ones, they sound like the tamiya ones. I have used them on my german elefant but not realy much on aircraft. I tend to use the pro modeler washes and mig's grease and oil stain.

I may have a go although I am doing a what if at the moment so who knows.

The A1 Lightning is amazing. I popped round there the other week while at my folks, for realism the builder now needs to add a very angry Rottweiler and some battered Jeeps.
