Can`t say i`ve had a really terrible kit, (he says trying to find some wood to touch, damn these all plastic offices.... ), but I would say that the Revell 1/48 `Black Bunny` F-14 kit was a pig to build. :grr:

Saying that however, as my modelling bread and butter is whiffery, if a kit really bugs me I just cut it up and use it for spares on my next whif build as needed. :thumb:

I found the recent Airfix 1/72 Spitfire F22 to be quite a disappointment.

But these three are probably the worst:

Worst kit I have ever had is the Airfix P39Q I'm currently building for the Red Star GB comp here. Having built many hundreds of models from various manufacturers over 5 decades this kit is simply abyssmal; warpage, shrinkage, misaligned moulds, detail which starts and disappears, parts which are little more than blobs on the sprue. This kit is destined for a little whiffing once the contest is over - I only enter for fun and to make the numbers up. It's so bad I actually wrote to Airfix about it.

Ah, that blasted Polish Hunter. Think I gave up and tried to convert it into a GA11.
MISSING - x1 Air Force.
If found please return to the UK.

I don't really know! I mean I've built a few kits now and everyone I have finished, yes there have been those that have been extremely challenging - but something's I think that most of the problems are down to myself.

For example, the new Airfix Vampire T11 - gorgeous kit, but I managed to make it hard. Airfix Gnat - I managed to get the main gear on back to front (yes I kept that quiet).

I think alot of my errors have now gone, check, dry fit, double check and then glue.

Worst kit ever - as I said, nothing yet, but I am sure that one will turn up soon

Considering it's essentially a 1965 kit, I thought it was okay. Especially as I only paid a couple of quid for it.

They should really think about retiring it though.

Well so far iv only built an finished 8 kits, 2x Airfix Hawk T.1's, Hurricane Mk.2c, Spitfire Mk.1a, Tornado GR.4A, Typhoon Mk.2c, Academy A-37B Dragonfly, Revell Spitfire Mk.5, they were all fantastic to build and a real eye pleaser :), the Revell Eurofighter Typhoon T.2 was a pain in the rear end though but she was never finished due to parts going missing so I bought a cheap easymodels 17sqn bird and detailed her up, I guess il put it down to experience.
The P-39Q Airacobra is a great little kit for the price, I paid £1.99, what a bargain!!!
Im still working on it though for the competition so my final opinion is still unknown.

I have 2 kits which are the worst I've had, 1st a Matchbox 1.72 F-104 Starfighter kit I received as a gift at School one time when I had just had been in Hospital for an Op on my foot which I found did not want to go together it kept falling apart for some odd reason. and 2ndly a Mirage F.1 kit I bought just having been on Holiday in France in an area where I discovered a French Air Force Base just up the road and the Mirage F.1s flew over both days we were there unfortunately I can't remember which base it was, the Mirage also wouldn't keep in one piece.

After reading that Mos, I`m glad that kit has never appealed to me.

I`d like to add the Revell 1/48 Tornado kit to the thread of infame. No doubt looks great when built with the wheels down, but go for the wheels up option and theres more gaps in it than the Titanic. :grr:

Before or after the split?

Airfix Sea King-hideous fit and mold quality has been suffering for years now.
Airfix Spitfire IX (Old tool), Less said about it the better.
Revell Typhoon, nice and reasonably accurate but was clearly never designed to be built. Though at least its a good price, whereas the lovely Hasegawa kit is nearly as expensive as a real one.
And thats just off the top of my head!

Airfix Grumman Goose.

It is so bad I have bent the ear of several Airfix staff and asked them to explain why they are creating such a good name for themselves with their new tool stuff
when new new modellers may pick up this kit and believe that all Airfix kit are this bad.

Don't get me wrong, I have successfully made loads of old stuff, like their Henschel and Do17, but they need to get the Goose and some of their older stuff (as mentioned here) off the shelves as they are damaging their good reputation.
'

Strewth, I had to look that up, as I remembered it as the "Series.1 Grumman Gosling" back in the day !!!!!

Built mine about a year after the Beatles broke-up & Jimi Hendrix died ~ putting it like that, makes it (& me) sound ancient.
I know it was BEFORE Slade hit their peak & before we (the U.K.) entered the (wretched) Common Market.

Still wouldn't say it was "the" worst they ever made...
(you shoulda seen their "Series.1 Gladiator", or their "Hawker Hart" (not the 'later' revised-tool Demon)

My ol' Grumman Gosling came with the (superb) Roy Cross artwork & paper instructions, bag AND staples that would have the P.C.Brigade going apoplectic today
(didn't think twice about ripping the staples out & fingertips bleeding under & around me fingernails  )

The original 'Red Stripe' I had came in White plastic & (naturally for the time) Boss-eyed roundels...

Purely for nostalgia reasons, I'd have THAT artwork/header/instruction-sheet from the Grumman Gosling in a heartbeat !!!!!!

I do agree that some of those (much) older Airfix molds have run their course & are best for "nostalgia only"
Still, it's a (much) different era now & not exactly the 0.17 pence per kit "new" that they were when I picked up the Gosling, circa '71

I can still strongly recall rushing down to Allan's newsagents to buy 3 x Airfix at 17 'new' pence each, one Saturday.
The ol' TD+X1 Focke-Wulf 190.D.9 ~ The Sky-Blue 'JE-J' Spitfire.IX ~ & the ancient 'FJ-C' Hawker Hurricane Rocket-firing Mk.IV ~ proper 'old Airfix' stuff
(all in bags & with finger-ripping staples !)

Around 1990, I managed to pick-up some "OLD" 1/48th USA-Monogram P.51-B vs '190.A Dogfight-Doubles in large boxes.
Kept the Razorback '51's but the '190's ALL went STRAIGHT in the bin (laughs).
It was after 1994, when Tamiya started bringing out their 'newer' molds (in single-seaters), that I finally sold & ditched the early Monogram stuff at our ol' club's IPMS show, under the table !
('Southern-Expo')

The Lindberg kits are often pretty bad, but I was recently given (& asked) to build a WW.1 Airfix Bristol Fighter & Albatross for an (aborted) WW.1 event down the local Church.... Man, THOSE KITS ARE ROUGH !!!!!!
(Like the Albatross exhaust-stack etc ~ real dross !)

I only stumbled-in here for the first time tonight (the modelling section), despite being an F.C. member for four years ~ (I only usually check on local air-activity stuff)

Even found a thread after some 1/32 Michigan A.N.G. Cutting Edge decals I (also) have, but not likely to part with 'em, as I've still got my 1/32 Tamiya F.4's stashed away in storage.

Nice to see there's such a large Forum section dedicated to kits n' stuff
(Also, good thread BTW).

My worst one would be the Airfix Saunders-Roe SR53 (or was it 73)?, that weird rocket powered interceptor :O

It was white plastic and was a terrible fit even for my standards

Cheers

Hope this is on the correct thread. Have any of you super modellers out there, and I know there are many, considered or indeed have undertaken a super-detailing job on the Airfix quick build black Hawk? I would be very interested to know.
Thanks.

Zvezda 1/72 MiG-31, I thought it was a bad box, so bought another, and that was a dog also. Managed to cobble together both kits into one useable airframe, but it wasn't great! Really wanted the -31 on my shelf . . . . .

Went to my email inbox today and noticed replies to my question about the Airfix quick build black Hawk. Being an idiot I managed to delete without reading the link. Would those kind enough to have replied please resubmit to me.
Many thanks.
