216 Squadron disbanded

Post by Gary » Fri Mar 21, 2014 9:35 am

This seemed to pass a little quietly.. Like all the recent disbandments
The disbandment parade of 216 Squadron took place yesterday at RAF Brize Norton, Oxfordshire. The parade, attended by the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Andrew Pulford, also saw the retirement after 30 years of distinguished service of the Tristar aircraft.

The disbandment brings to an end a notable 96 year history of 216 Squadron, which for the last ten years has been a vital part of the air transport “Airbridge” to Afghanistan, and transport & air-to-air refueling aircraft to the Falkland Islands.

The Tristar is replaced by the RAF’s new Voyager fleet operated currently by Squadrons 10 & 101. Voyager will guarantee the RAF’s Strategic Air Mobility capability well beyond 2020.

"Voyager will guarantee the RAF’s Strategic Air Mobility capability well beyond 2020."

For all the money spent on it, I would hope we are going to get more than 6 years out of it.

Talk about keeping it quiet, bit of a shame the Tri Stars didn't get to perform any FlyPasts like how the VC-10s did.

Had heard out of Marshalls that there was to be a joint flyby by the 2 remaining Tristars and a Voyayer; looks like this failed to materialise.

On Monday there are flypasts over three airfields but don't know which ones, followed by an avalanche of images on here I suspect.

With regard to any Tristar Flypasts, has anyone got any definitive details (where and when), and should it be happening would a NOTAM be required

Thanks

I believe that ZE704, ZE705, ZD948, ZD950, ZD951 and ZD953 are all at Bruntingthorpe. ZE705 went there on the 12th, ZD953 on the 19th and the other four yesterday (the 25th). So ZD951 no longer at Brize Norton.
