Lengthening the runway? Well they can't do it at the A15 end, thats for sure. How much can it be extended at the Harmston end?

It says it's a rebuild not an extension, what will happen with the airshow while work is carried out?

Well I ain't an expert but I presume they will do the runway first, thus the airshow can take place in 2015,

It does actually say ¨Lengthening the runway.

Did you read the Article?
The 1st sentence in the BBC article says " rebuilding and lengthening"
And this link also says "rebuilding and extension"
https://www.gov.uk/government/news/raf- ... ay-repairs
There is also a long standing thread on this topic here:

Hi.
Just a personal opinion, I think the word "extension" was used to describe the extended life of the airfield after
the rebuild of the runway, rather than the extension of the actual runway.
Have been wrong many times before though.
Regards,
John

As per 'Greenbat' post above...the article states "More than £35m is to be spent on rebuilding and lengthening the runway at RAF Waddington in Lincolnshire." That would appear to be a signed, sealed & delivered deal to increase by metric metres the extent of the tarmac in the longitudinal axis....unless I'm reading too much into the bold type section I highlighted to add clarity & to aid in the avoidance of doubt??

The biggest thing they are doing is removing the hump in the runway, and I suspect to be ready for the " Unannouced 2015 airshow" will not be on their list a deliverables

Its been mentioned many times on various forums especially UKAR via SilentFlight, from what i have heard the RC.135 will spend a lot of time over at Mildenhall during this time and the runway should be fine for 2015s airshow no problem

Hi not sure if this will help with the question on how they plan to lengthen the runway. There is plans for a Eastern bypass around Lincoln which looking at the maps it joins the A15 near the wave car park if so they could extend the runway over the A15.
Link to page and maps here

cheers

that depends when they intend to get the bypass started.. if ever?

The proposed bypass supposedly joins the A15 three quarters of a mile north of the wave, so would have no effect on the wave or the runway work, and work isn't due to start until after the runway work is completed anyway.
Anyone want to take a bet with me? I'll say that whatever they do to the runway they won't lengthen it beyond the 20 threshold fence and it won't affect the route of the A15 at all.
Any takers

Cheers Homebrew, your right my mistake I obviously read it too fast
At least you simply pointed out the correction unlike some who seem to find it necessary to shoot down people and take the focus of conversation away from the original post! I'm not surprised so many folk just watch the goings on on here and don't contribute so much!
Also thanks for the input from Ghostflight for answering the question on the 2015 airshow.
I'd like to thank those that are genuinely helpful and like me just want to enjoy our wonderful hobby, some however should remember it is just a hobby and calm down!

A lot of faith being put in news reports, and we all know how accurate they are.
from the ConstructionIndex
The rebuilding and extension of RAF Waddington’s runway will be the first major upgrade work carried out at the airfield since the 1960s.
RAF Waddington’s station commander, Group Captain Rich Barrow, said: “The existing 9,000-foot-long runway has reached the end of its lifespan. For RAF Waddington to continue to deliver on its mission to generate world class expeditionary surveillance and intelligence capabilities, the runway infrastructure must be modified to support our aircraft, and our highly qualified pilots and ground staff.”
Work on upgrading the runway starts in July and is expected to be completed by late summer 2015. During the rebuild period the station’s aircraft will temporarily relocate to alternative operating bases across the country.
No mention about the runway being lengthened, just infrastructure modified and upgraded.
What it will do is
EXTEND the runway’s operational life by a further 25 years.

May not have to go outside the existing airfield boundary. May strengthen the under/overruns for departures only - as per Mildenhall.
