Bruntingthorpe Airfield - General access

Post by chubsbdc » Thu Jan 23, 2014 1:03 pm

Hi all,

Can anyone advise if you can gain access to the airfield on any day other than Sundays.
The Cold wars museum is open on Sundays but I can't normally get out a pass out!!

If it is only Sunday how far can you get into the airfield....I assume the carpark for the Museum.
Streetview doesn't go far enough in!!

I want to visit to photograph/view some of the external aircraft.....both military and others!!
I am also hoping to identify some Plaxton coaches that are stored under the wings of some of the 'larger planes'...totally off forum

Regards
Brian

Doesn't look too good I'm afraid. From their website;
Please note that the Aircraft Museum is open to the public every Sunday between 10am and 4pm. The entry fee is £5.00 per adult (accompanied children are free of charge)

On my visit last year I paid my £5 to the man on the security gate, he then gave me directions on where to park, (basically drove down the taxiway and headed to the Guppy). He radioed to one of the museum staff that I was on my way who then marshalled me where to park. Was left to potter around the museum aircraft, and inside the Guppy. Only limited views were possible of the stored aircraft which are not accessible to museum visitors, definitely no close up shots possible of those but better than outside!
Can't comment on the Coaches!

Normal days:

The company that looks after the airliners lets people photograph them when they arrive but doesn't like them being photographed after that, the site is surrounded by thick hedges and tall trees on all sides since it is a proving ground and they don't like people watching, as you enter from the turn from the main road there is a hangar on the left hand side which I believe is where the new Tornado is being put together and it may be outside. The gate guardian's should be visible from the path before the security hut as it's only 45m from the fence and you will not be able to see the museum aircraft at all unless you go on a Sunday or a special event.

Sundays:

On Sunday's you can see the large planes but you cannot get close although when I went on 1st September, I saw at least 3 people just walk next to the fence for around 3/4 of the way towards the planes, took their pictures then walked back to the museum but I've no idea if they were caught or not.

How about getting inside either of the big grey airliners on a Sunday?

Be careful, this is on soon.

A friend mentioned it to me the other day.
If there's a big Plant Show on, there will be a lot of security, there's a lot expensive kit and they won't want it going walkies.
I'd be surprised if you could wander around, bear in mind it'll take a week to set it up and strip it down, if not longer.

You really need to go on a Demo Day, you need to feel those afterburners !

We visited Bruntingthorpe for the first time for the Twilight event back in November 2015 and having not been forewarned we ventured over towards the Airliners & Tri-Stars and had a right good look around the place..

To our amazement one of the Greek 747's was open with a set of stairs leading up to it, so with none of us having ever set foot in a 747 temptation took over and we decided to take a closer look. The inside was pretty much gutted with a few seats dotted around here and there and there were spent flash bang and smoke grenade casings all over the place, the type you'd expect to see when paintballing that sort of thing; I can only imagine that it'd perhaps seen it's fair share of Military training.

The best part for me was probably the staircase leading up to the flight deck where we had this enormous aircraft all to ourselves whilst sitting in the driving seat :D

Soon after, we decided that we'd maybe rode our luck a little and vacated but like I said it was our first time there and rather innocently we just felt that because it was a haven for the aviation enthusiast it was kind of the done thing to have a look around.

Looking back I now realize that we'd been somewhere that perhaps we shouldn't have and on subsequent visits I've taken note that it's now made clear that that area is strictly off limits. Needless to say, I've not attempted to access that area again...

Being a volunteer at the museum on the Buccs and an ex GJD services employee i can tell you that there is no access beyond the museum pans and opening times at anytime.
The vehicles, Tristar's and 747's are stored for commercial operating companies. Yes people do chance their luck occasionally and some even get away with it. However, more cameras have been installed to cover the car and aircraft storage areas recently so i'd seriously suggest you don't chance your luck. Security will eject you from the site.

even we as museum volunteers aren't allowed up there, there is no reason for us to be there, There is as stated Plantworks exhibitions on currently with even more security too.
