Chinese Carrier images
Received these with a request to share them, not sure if they've been seen before but they are certainly interesting.
Not sure how far along the concept is or whether it'll even be built, anyone know more?

I know that if you asked an 8yo to draw a cross between an aircraft carrier and the Death Star, thats pretty much what they'd draw...GOOSE wrote:...Not sure how far along the concept is or whether it'll even be built, anyone know more?
I think those images have as much to do with naval architecture and future Chinese naval doctrine as Coronation Street has to do with High Engery Physics. Fantasy claptrap...

Looks like a Gary Anderson production (Bless him). Wonder if it flies - like cloudbase one?
Re: Chinese Carrier images
Looks like something out of a James Bond movie! Does it 'swallow ' other countries' nuclear subs?

Re: Chinese Carrier images
These images have been floating about on the web for a couple of years now. Certainly an eye opener if it is to be believed!

And there's plenty more where that came from!
Re: Chinese Carrier images
From our recent module on Marine Environmental Tech at uni it fits very closely to the concepts for the majority of future vessels. Multiple hulls are used to increase stability and reduce drag and thereby decrease fuel consumption, and are included in the majority of designs for large future ships. You have to wonder at the scale of the concept though, two separate runways and large amounts of aircraft, may be a slightly ambitious designer and no sense of budget!

Re: Chinese Carrier images
I find the rear of the carrier a bit ambitious. Those pilots would have a humdinger of a time trying to land there in rolling seas with that overhang and getting in underneath it.
Re: Chinese Carrier images
Carriers generally operate in pairs so if one flight deck is out of use, a/c can still be operated. The above concept would allow carriers to operate individually.
Not too much defensive armament visible though so it would still be accompanied by a flotilla of A/S and other destroyers.

Re: Chinese Carrier images
Would disagree on the defensive armament, i can see numerous missile launchers and quite a lot of CIWS type systems. Six of which are on the quarterdeck alone (around the helipads) together with a DP Deck gun on the rear. On the bow you can see a deck gun (dual purpose) and a SAM launcher together with quadruple SAM launchers typical in location of the US carriers on the side of the Bow/Down the side.
In the image/artists impression, there is more than adequate defensive measures.
From the impression, i can make out atleast 20 x CIWS (US Carriers have what, 4-6?), several DP Deck guns, atleast 8 SAM launchers, of which all are double quadruple launchers. Then there are several close in systems similar to our Orelikon.
Would be nice if it was real but i can't see it coming to fruition, not in that design anyway.

With what looks like a folding-wing KJ-2000 (Il-76 AEW) on the deck for scale, it will make a nice big target for someone.
MISSING - x1 Air Force.
If found please return to the UK.

Re: Chinese Carrier images
Looking at the scale, it works out approximately to be around 1800-1900ft long and around 500+ft wide.
Re: Chinese Carrier images
Looking at that KJ-2000, if it veers an inch to the right it would take out half the aircraft on board!PR9 wrote:With what looks like a folding-wing KJ-2000 (Il-76 AEW) on the deck for scale, it will make a nice big target for someone.
Re: Chinese Carrier images
That thing is so wide that they could have a cross-runway, then they wouldn't need to turn it into the wind for take-offs and landings.
Re: Chinese Carrier images
Can you imagine trying to land on a sideways moving ship?

Ship ? That thing's about the size of Liechtenstein.Adam wrote:Can you imagine trying to land on a sideways moving ship?
