Nuclear powered C-5's???????

Post by GOOSE » Tue Dec 22, 2009 8:23 pm

From Janes, poor wording me thinks :D :D

The upgraded Lockheed Martin C-5M strategic transport aircraft has completed a series of tests in surge operational conditions as part of its operational test and evaluation (OT&E) programme at Dover Air Force Base (AFB), Delaware, the US Air Force (USAF) announced on 4 December.

The aircraft performed 31 days of continuous cargo delivery sorties from Dover AFB to Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, without refuelling to test wartime contingency operations.

That's quite a modernisation program?

Nuclear powered aircraft was certainly something that both the US and Russians looked into.

The US test flew an operational nuclear reactor on a modified B-36

There is a programme on one of the Discovery channels about the US/USSR nuclear bombers. Quite interesting.

Part of the "Planes that never flew" series covering the proposed WS-125 (B-72) nuclear bomber. Can still catch the series on Discovery Turbo.
MISSING - x1 Air Force.
If found please return to the UK.

A lot longer than 40 years,it's almost 42 years since 66-8303 had its first flight (March 1968).
The design is nearer to 46 years old, mind you I am far too young for all that
