Osprey`s to Mildenhall

Post by Northsky » Mon Jun 13, 2011 4:36 pm

According to the latest issue of Defence helicopter ,the UK government has given approval to the U.S. to deploy a squadron of CV-22 to Mildenhall. This follows a shift in policy by Washington regarding the armed services posture in Europe.
Apparently the recent deployoment of CV-22 was by African Command in support of operation Odyssey Dawn.

This is correct, the Osprey will be a permanent fixture at Mildenhall very soon.

An aircraft worthy to replace the MH-53M although in my books, i wish the Pave Low was still around.

Does this mean the 21st SOS will be re-activated or will it be another squadron operating the Osprey's?

TankBuster
And there's plenty more where that came from!

Be interesting to see how long it is before the Ospreys arrive, well I will be more than happy to watch them flying round in evening while I'm sat outside my tent beer in hand

Will this move bring some A10's back to the UK?

Does anybody know if there is a time scale on this deployment , or is it a case of 'wheels on tarmac'?
I'm really looking forwards to getting down there this time !

Exciting news and I guess represents USAF's committment to the UK as a base. Wasn't long ago there was talk of the SOG leaving the UK altogether. Also, if I am right these will be the first USAF aircraft of a new type to be based in this country since the F15E's back in the early 1990's. Yes the HH60's but they were displaced from Iceland.

Permanent as far as i know?
Giving Mildenhall back it's Special Forces Helicopter operations that were taken away when the MH53s disbanded.

According to "Aviation Week" dated 7/6/2011 says quote "Next year, AFSOC will also be the first to stand up an overseas V-22 base, when CV-22s will be based at RAF Mildenhall, U.K" .

Also "Defence Talk" say "The first of the MC-130Js are slated to be delivered to their home bases during fall of this year" I assume Mildenhall will be getting these?

How much space have LN got? Would they be able to fit a squadron of A-10's in?
Such a good question, you asked it twice....

Joking aside, didn`t some F-15 units disband or go home recently IIRC? (When I say recently it may have been a year or two ago????)

I have it on good authority that the Dust Devils will return to Mildenhall with the CV-22!

493 lost a few jets, no squadron disbanded. You might be getting confused with the F-16's from Spangdahlem that returned stateside from one the ANG units.

I have heard the jungle drums saying some A-10's are heading back to Lakenheath for a TDY later in the summer (After Lakenheath's runway is reopened before anyone says)... Really hope the drums are right
