In 1940 a group of US pilots volunteered to augment the RAF in its fight against the Luftwaffe. They were formed into three RAF squadrons (Nos.71, 121 and 133) flying Hurricanes and Spitfires. In 1941, after America entered the fray, they were turned over to the 8th Air Force and, in 1942, became the 334th, 335th and 336th Fighter Squadrons of the 4th Fighter Group at RAF Debden and equipped with P-47s. Since then the 4th has commemorated its heritage and, at last week's show at SeymourJohnson AFB NC, the current 4th Fighter Wing displayed the Wing CO's suitably marked F-15E among equally colorful Squadron CO birds.
