Remembrance
Remembrance
Just finished watching a really respectful Festival of Remembrance. This with various games since last Friday both Scottish and English
having total silence for a a few moments in life, show most people remember and respect..Over the years I have seen vans pull into lay byes ,Tractors stop on single track roads,a bus pull into a lay bye on a dual carriageway,Golfers on a lot of places on the local golf course just stop. They were all remembering all those who have served are serving and ther families.Tonight I was at A small celebration of remembrance at the start of the Championship golf course at Carnoustie to honour our towns 2 V.C.S along with all others who perished .Its small but its all bells and whistles as will tomorrows be at the main Memorial but there was about 40 people there but every year it gets bigger. Must admit I liked the old style Saturday night show but have to admit times move on .One amusing bit tonight to those who have served was a local Air Cadet had been appointed as escort to the Deputy Lord lieutenant .He carried the wreath to the monument handed it to her she put it down and stepped back and waited took her ages to realise he couldnt salute unless she wanted her ear clipped.A pal of mine (Also known as lord lieutenant)who we relieved of a lot of cash on Sunday for the poppies usually just carries the wreath herself.Yet this Deputy had an escort come form Arbroath 8 miles away ..
Will be trying to keep in step tomorrow

Re: Remembrance
Well done for this post.
Coverage of the Albert Hall ceremony and today’s Cenotaph march past always stirs the emotions and long may they do so.
Oakham in previous years had personnel from RAF Cottesmore in a parade through the town, lower key when the camp closed.
I remember the days mentioned above when everyone stopped for two minutes. I remember well as an apprentice working in a machine shop when the noise just disappeared and silence reigned. Back then most of the operators had clearer memories of the significance of the moment.
Tomorrow, the real 11, 11 , 11, Oakham plans a short ceremony in the Castle grounds.
When living in Europe, white chrysanthemum flowers were placed by all.
In memory of Rick and Peter 58 years ago.
Edited
Chrysanthemums, or mums,' are especially suitable funeral flowers for families with European or Asian roots. Specifically, in France, Spain, Italy, Poland, and Croatia, it is customary to bring only chrysanthemums to funerals since they have historically symbolised death and mourning in these countries.
Google offers much more background info.

Re: Remembrance
Sadly, that won't be the case with some of the Celtic fans at today's game - no poppies on the shirts, Palestinian and Hezzbolah flags being waved, and chanting and booing during the moment of silence. Result: a mixture of shame and embarrasment for decent, respectful people across Scotland.
Re: Remembrance
I was going to mention that but decided they were not worth the words.I am a Celtic fan and remember many silences over the years, including one for the Ibrox disaster but for the last twenty or so years I have only been at one game.A Cup Final I just dont want to be remotely linked with them.'Our event today was smaller than usual for some reason, only 16 from the Legion and few Army cadets and no Air Cadets. We had enough to have a decent parade when everything was totalled up.I have to highlight the very young Cubs and BB s on a very cold day they were perfectly behaved.Hope for the future maybe? A few hundred turned up as usual.

Re: Remembrance
Jeez!! Huge Senior Moment!!!. There was me thinking 11/11 to discover later in the day that the Remembrance service at our Memorial in the village was on 10/11 [a Sunday of course] I am embarrassed to say the least!. However, we did raise a significant amount for the Royal British Legion the previous week with an event, so I hope you will forgive my honest admission. My wife and I watched 'Saving Private Ryan' the day before, so all relevant thoughts were there!.
Re: Remembrance
Echo the above. In times where the world moves on, its nice to see that so many, especially young people turn out or are respectful. maybe there is hope for this generation after all...

We will remember them.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Re: We will remember them.
Pleased to say my employer observed the two minutes silence this morning.
Turned out there was a former member of the British Forces inside the restaurant getting some food prior to 11am, and he thanked us for holding the silence as he left.

Re: Remembrance
I didn't observe the silence today. I was in a meeting with one other person. I don't these days think it obligatory to do so. I am capable of having my own respectful thoughts about our service personnel whenever I feel it necessary. I don't feel I always have to comply. I have this year read two large histories of 'D' day, a book about Arnhem, and another about the invasion of Sicily, so I am well aware of sacrifices made. This just an old man's view.
Re: We will remember them.
RAF Cottesmore that was.
This morning, close to the engine test building that was, during the two minute silence two red kites flew over in trail, heading north across the runway. Twenty feet high, makes one wonder even if it was just a coincidence.
Blue sky from horizon to horizon.

Re: Remembrance
I'm a volunteer for the CWGC and pay my respects every time I visit the graves in my care, I still observe the silence, sometimes more than once, as do millions of others around the world, shops and supermarkets, it's quite moving to witness, I love to see the respect shown to our fallen.
If you can keep your head whilst all around are losing theirs, you have probably completely misread the situation!!
