KC46 crew query

Post by Philwinward » Wed Aug 21, 2024 3:14 pm

I haven’t had chance to look over a KC46 yet, but perhaps somebody can clear up a question I have concerning crew access.
Do the crew need a set of airstairs to board the aircraft ?
I know the KC10 used air stairs but I think it also had a ladder that hung down vertically from the front door that could be used . Often used to see this ladder when the aircraft was parked and shut down, but never saw anybody use it.
It seems much easier to access a KC135 from ground level than wait for a set of airstairs.
I wonder how many sets of stairs Mildenhall has available ?
Think back to ‘86 and be the Libyan raid when Mildenhall was overflowing with tankers, could they have handled so many aircraft if they all needed air stairs ? Just wondering !!

No integrated stairs, but there is an access ladder just behind the nose landing gear. I think airstairs are the primary and preferred option, but they're at least not required just to get crew on board.

i have used the ladder on a KC10. when one was at Cottesmore for riat the crew let us have a look around before they managed to get some steps and open it to the public. was fun to enter such a large aircraft by climbing a ladder.
