Resident trying to stop Southend Vulcan ground runs
from the BBC, I honestly don't believe it.
The aircraft has been there 30 years doing regular runs, it's an airport for goodness sake!
He probably complains about the sound of an ice cream van in his street disturbing him as well but is the first in the queue to get a 99

I'm thinking about setting up a petition to demand more testing of the Southend Vulcan. I live in York now and didn't quite hear those Olympus engines during the last test - anyone signing up?

The article seems to suggest he is an attention seeking local nuisance who as a member of the local airport noise forum has the ability to address his issues with them but choose to go to the media.

Re: Resident trying to stop Southend Vulcan ground runs
When I was working at RAF Finningley, a local resident in one of the surrounding villages, tried to sue the MoD for subsidence damage to his property claiming it was due to the Vulcans despite the fact that the last Vulcan had left about 10 years earlier and the village was located on top of an underground coal seam.

Re: Resident trying to stop Southend Vulcan ground runs
It's not as if they ground run the Vulcan all day and every day, this character sounds like a typical nimby. Living in the south of England about fifteen miles from Gatwick, every week the local press is full of complaints from people who live under the flightpath moaning about the incessant interruptions from overflying aircraft. Going back a few decades, it was possible to hear the likes of BAC 1-11s taking off, but these days aircraft are a lot quieter. As already stated, a lot of these people move into the area, so they should have noticed the planes overflying, maybe they should complain to the estate agent and try and sue them if it's upsetting them. It's also worth bearing in mind, they probably bought their home because it was a lot cheaper than others in the area. I have no sympathy with anyone who complains about the noise from nearby airports, or railway lines, motorways or similar.
Re: Resident trying to stop Southend Vulcan ground runs
Indeed really sad these characters living near bases/airports and complaining. Unfortunately it is a sign of these times with people complaining about everything, people getting more intolerant towards everything and everybody... If this situation occured over here in The Netherlands nowadays this gentleman would have been treated with the utmost care and the plane would have been banned for ever starting up again! That's the reason why approach and departure procedures have been alternated countless of times (even resulting in dangerous situations only to prevent noise complaints!), why several planes are limited or forbidden to visited certain bases (hampering training for pilots, ATC etc), why we hardly have any exercises or visitors anymore these days over here etc... I hope for your sake that you Brits will not follow the same path!

Re: Resident trying to stop Southend Vulcan ground runs
I live near Heathrow, have done all my life (65 years) and I always say the only people who have a right to complain about aircraft noise are those who were here before the airport was built. And there can't be any of those left now I wouldn't think. Everyone else moved here knowing there is an airport nearby so they have no grounds to complain.

Farnborough is the same.
Re: Resident trying to stop Southend Vulcan ground runs
I live 1 mile away from the Vulcan .It does engine runs about 6 times a year with about 5 minutes noise each time. The engines are not run on full takeoff power.
I went to a airshow once when 4 took off in a stream take of that was a little bit of noise the ground shook.
Or even better 16 lightning doing a stream take off at Coltishall at BOB'sdisplay .There used to be a car sticker ' Miltary jet noise sound of freedom '
In 1940 he would have complained of the spitfire and hurricanes taking of because he did not like the sound of German bombs hitting the airfield it was RAF Rochford then a fighter base
