Interesting idea to give the A-10s to Ukraine, I'd imagine they'd be really useful. Although with my limited knowledge I am suprised the USAF wants to retire the A-10, seems like a really good CAS platform for a conflict in a busy environment and CSAR. When the A-10 and its competitors were up for selection the low speed of the A-10 was seen as a great advantage. An improved A-7 Corsair was proposed, it would have had a supersonic dash over the target and FEBA (Forward Edge of Battle Area) but its high speed was actually a disadvantgae as it after an attack it would have spent too long in hostile airspace.

It does not actually say Ukraine, the reporter has added that part. No surprise on the A-10s, the USAF has been after getting shut of them for years, they are just not get up and go cosmic enough!! As for the F-22s daft of the USAF to accept them in the first place knowing they would never be combat capable. Like buying a car with no engine to learn how to drive!!!

If memory serves the USAF have wanted to retire the A10 for years, but pressure from land forces has caused the DoD to instruct that it stays in service.

The plan to retire 118 F-15E Strike Eagles is not mentioned, originally half the fleet was due to go. Has this been shelved?

As mentioned the airforce have wanted to retire the hogs forever ,I don’t think They should be sent to UKraine ! I don’t feel the air superiority is good enough for them to make a worthwhile impact on the Russian armour , without taking large losses.

Surely it's manpads that pose the risk to A-10's these days.
