BBMF Spitfire Formation

Post by shuck » Thu Aug 04, 2022 10:10 am

The Battle of Britain Memorial flight flew a five-ship formation with Spitfire - P7350, AB910, MK356, PM631, PS915 at Coningsby on 22/9/98.

Does anyone know whether the formation was flown for a special occasion or event. Was this the first time that all five BBMF Spitfires had flown together?

Thanks

Five flew together for the 50th anniversary Battle of Britain flypast in 1990 although PS853 was still with the flight then and not MK356

I recall that all the BBMF Spitfires flew at an event at Biggin Hill a few years ago, it's happened a few times over the years.
In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

Except if you read the Op question Seven. TB382 and TE311 were still on the RAFEF books. The exhibition Flight got rid of them in late 1999 or 2000. The BBMF took them both, and decided to rebuild the later. Which didn't fly till 2012

I read it two or three times as they'd flown over the last few days with 5 Spits. I thought it was odd as was sure at least one of the XIX's is OOS at the moment. Then I was going to reference the old Airfix 5 fighters gift set, and upon double checking that, realised one of the included kits was a Hurricane!

Not sure about 1998, but these days that late in the year could have been Memorial flight clubs open day.

TE311 PRTF on 19/10/12
TB382 was used for spares and joined BBMF in October 1999

Also the five above along with the Lancaster and two Hurricanes flew together in 2007 at Duxford for the BBMF 50th anniversary
