Who's was it then?

A missile fired off the southern Californian coast has been caught on camera - but even the Pentagon has not been able to confirm what it was.

"Nobody within the Department of Defence that we've reached out to has been able to explain what this trail is, where it came from", Pentagon spokesman Colonel Dave Lapan said.

Col. Lapan said all indications were that the defence department was not involved, and the missile's trail might have been created by an object flown by a private company.

The North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) and the US Northern Command (NORTHCOM) said the trail was not the result of a foreign military launching a missile.

They said: "We can confirm that there is no threat to our nation."

A US Navy spokesperson said it was not their missile, adding there was no navy activity reported in that part of the region.

a bold statement. So, no idea, where it came from, who fired it, what it was, but dont worry. So either a) actually, we do know, but its really secret and despite someone's obvious cock up, we're not letting on, b) we know where it came from, who fired it, what it was, but have no control over those responsible, or c) its ok, it was pointed at another nation - relax!

Whenever a camera happens to be in the right place at the right time I am suspicious. It's probably a publicity stunt and the owners will reveal themselves in due course.

I've got some photos (somewhere) of contrails at sunset over Rhossilli beach made by airliners that look just like that. The aircraft cathces the sun and looks like a dot of flame at the head of a smoke trail.
In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.

It is all about perspective. These types of aircraft contrails are nothing new. Aircraft contrails can exhibit the characteristics of a ballistic missile launch. The first set of images on the following website are from California during December 2009.

Some excellent Flightaware analysis on the following. See webcam footage of another contrail plume 24 hours after the helicopter crew footage.

'Posted by: Liembo | 11/9/10 | 10:22 pm |
My research shows it as AWE808, or UPS902, their altitude (for contrail formation) and position are both pretty close, though I believe 808 is the stronger candidate. I base this one the way AWE808 appeared on the horizon TODAY (Tuesday, Nov. 9) on its same flight path at approximately the same time. I made a screen cap of a Newport Beach webcam with AWE808 making a very familiar contrail to the west.'

More people are paying attention to these types of contrails. 24 hours after the helicopter crew footage people in California are still reporting 'missile launches'.

Snippet from the posted footage.

'This footage was taken in Orange County California on November 9th, 2010 between 5pm and 5:30pm. One day after the original controversial missile footage was taken. Is it a second
mystery?

It was taken from the 4th floor offices of Binary Pulse Technology Marketing through heavily tinted windows. It was taken with a commercial-grade HD camera by a professional cameraman employed by Binary Pulse.

The trail clearly began over the ocean and shot straight up from a billowing cloud of smoke. It then took a sharp change of course, heading south and west...eventually disappearing.'

Just thinking out loud..............

If this was a missile launch of some description then surely

a) a listening post whether on the ground or in the sky would have picked it up and

b) there would have been a significant reaction by the US in sending resources to look/take action, in view of how nervous they are about being attacked?

Some more examples of how an aircraft contrail can be misidentified as a ballistic missile launch. It is purely about perspective.
