It's 40 years today that the ACL vessel 'Atlantic Conveyor' was hit by 2 Exocet missiles.

RIP to all the crew, armed forces personnel and volunteers from the Mersey Dock and Harbour company that lost their lives that day..

I wonder if they ever found out what she was actually carrying on that fateful day. It did seem a lot of inventory items were 'lost' when she went down ;-)

Makes you feel old . . . . Can remember the papers, the evening news reports, the radio . . . . Somehow doesn’t really seem that long ago . . .

Three Chinooks and some Wessex were on board, a lot of tents and at least one Atrel cabin for processing photo recce film once ashore.
Dunno if true, but... I've been told there was only one copy of the full cargo manifest and that was on board!
The story goes that when that fact leaked out one of the AAC squadrons claimed they all had their mess kits on board in readiness for a celebratory meal when the war ended and as it could not be proved either way, the insurance company paid up. Anyone confirm this please?
