UK G7 2021- Tittle Tattle

Post by slogen51 » Tue Jun 01, 2021 3:58 pm

I see Marham is open 24 hours from 11-13 June

EGYM MARHAM [Back to Top]

U3195/21 - AD OPENING HOURS
01-04 0700-1600
05-06 CLOSED
07-08 0700-1600
09-10 0700-1700
11-13 0001-2359 (H24)
14-17 0700-1600

Cornwall is a long way from Norfolk in an F-35B so I wonder if a voyager will be on alert?

Hmm. Why Marham? I’d guess any air cover would be dealt w/ by Typhoons (& I’m thinking that Coningsby to Newquay is pretty much the same as Marham ro Newquay in a jet) and Brize is open 24/7 anyway for tanker support. Is it for Sandringham? Do Royals get involved w/ G7?!

It's the norm to have a NATO E-3 up during a major summit. So maybe one will use Marham.

Why would an AWACS use Marham ? .If NATO were to be tasked to cover it would surly operate from its home base which is only just an hour or so away, the RAF would also use Waddington based assets ,for me Marham being open 24 hrs could be coincidence ,maybe the Queen is having a few days at Sandringham so the base needs to be open in case of an emergency

Previous F.3 Dets used Brize as a forward Base for QRA - however with the concentration of tanker/transport assets at Brize now it would be too risky to have fast jets and large a/c sharing the same circuit/approach as they have such different performance and operating requirements.
Yeovilton or Culdrose might make more sense for a temporary QRA location perhaps

Can't speak for Yeovilton, but Culdrose currently only has a single parking spot suitable for missile armed aircraft and, as I understand it, it's intended only for emergency use.

During the NATO Summit in South Wales they established a CAP over the Bristol Channel. Can't remember if it was 24/7 or not, but would expect to see something similar in a couple weeks.

So what would be wrong with a detachment of aircraft operating from valley.

Think some here should look at a map!, Coningsby/Waddington to the SW is the same distance pretty much as Marham, so no benefit there, or not one I can see.

Probably be for a guaranteed alternative diversion field, nothing to do with F-35s.

Yes, the F35's won't be used in any CAP/QRA role on the mainland whilst there are Typhoons already in place and serving that role.

Don't know how many 'Armed A/c' parking-spots Yeovilton has, BUT the problem with VL is that they close on time for siesta's & 'sleepies' ! There aint nothing worth staying open late, after 14:00 on Friday or God Forbid....at the weekend.
Anyone remember the USN Carrier F/A-18's that had VL briefed as a designated low-fuel diversion, but VL was closed & they had to use Lyneham, just weeks before that closed permanently?

I would imagine a couple of Typhoons will be moved to Brize along with a sentry plenty of room at Brize and both the jets and heavies have everything they need at Brize. A massive ordnance bay at Brize too for arming the jets. We Will have to wait and see. Brize recently updated it's flying and circuit procedures Evergreen 44 to help tackle the problem you mentioned.

Why would anything need to operate away from its home base? I think there's a lot of people on here posting in the hope their local airfield sees something different, rather than looking at it from a realistic point of view.

Nothing new there Chris! Seems many fail at basic arithmetic and make 2+2 anything but 4.

I'm only basing my assumption on the Olympics typhoons we're moved to Northolt which is much closer to London then what connigsby is. I agree with your point though EGVP as the aircraft can very much operate from there home bases

Maybe the thread should be re-titled to 'G7 2021: Asumptions and other stuff no-one knows anything about".

How many Typhoons moved to Brize for the last conference in Cardiff? I think if you answer that question correctly then it will give you an idea on what will happen for this one too ;)

The last conference was in Newport (Celtic Manor) not Cardiff... although Cardiff Airport was used.

All these theories!! Marham is open on 11 June for one purpose only - to provide my Birthday flypast. :)
