Sorry if this has already been said but why hasn't the air support for this been deployed closer than Coningsby?

Just watching the Voyager and Typhoons making there way down to the South West and it got me thinking. After all there was provision to base QRA aircraft out of Northolt for London 2012, why not a TDY to Yeovilton or somewhere closer?

Apologies if this has already been talked about, I'm joining the party late on page 13!

Cheers,

Stu

Because they don't need to locate them any nearer as they can easily A2A refuel. With London's crowded airspace and the fact there was no nearby AAR area it was more practical to base at Northolt.
That's only my interpretation

That would be the reasoning I'd go with too.

To support a temporary QRA type setup you'd need suitable accommodation, fuel, ground crew, maintainace and armaments bods etc, etc. I doubt Yeovilton or any station closer than Marham/Coningsby has the required staff or facilities, so you'd be shipping loads of RAF personel down from Lincolnshire for 5 days, when the transit time from Linconshire for a live shout is perhaps 10 minutes (and a few people moaning about loud bangs).

CAP just means going round and round in circles for 8 hours, popping off to the flying fuel station every 2 hours. 20 minutes transit to and from homebase is neither here nor there, although probably best to eat the egg sandwiches sooner rather than later.

The Olympics at Northolt was as much a public show of intent as anything else. No reason it couldn't have been done from Coningsby, except (AIUI) operating from Northolt the RAF bods got free Olympic tickets for a couple of weeks, so it wasn't an unpopular posting.

Being suggested elsewhere that the RAAF A330 is going to Stansted for a couple of days.

It would be nice if someone did a magazine just on G7, listing and photographs of all the aircraft and locations that were involved, the ones that were involved bringing in the US equipment etc, so predominantly US themed. Brief rundown on what it's purpose here was. And even mentioning the air cover, R.N cover etc. Everything all "under one roof". Just a thought.
