Simple query please;
When the Royal Navy operated Phantoms, they were fitted with an extended nose wheel leg for carrier operations.
Were those removed before the F4s were transferred to the RAF, or shortly after handover?

F4 nose wheel query
Re: F4 nose wheel query
Presumably while they were at St Athan after the Navy passed them on for maintenance first
Re: F4 nose wheel query
The nosewheel was not removed and remained the same but the extension functionality was de-activated/disabled. It could, I understood, be reactivated should the need have ever arisen.
Re: F4 nose wheel query
I can recall seeing the Phantoms at Leuchars using the extending nose wheel during take off. Either that or it extended by gravity as the aircraft rotated. 43 Sqn flew the FG1 version, and when the Navy got rid of theirs, 111 Sqn swapped their FGR2's for FG1's and moved to Leuchars, so the FG1 in RAF service were all operated by Sqn's at Leuchars. The FG1 also had a small set of traffic lights on the forward facing nose wheel door, to assist deck crews on carrier launches.
