I refuse to click on the link, the Express makes up any old tosh to get a rise.

Nothing in the article that hasn't already been posted here, but the comments are somewhat entertaining with the British public pointing out some of the highly dubious money wastage by the government.

Covid certainly doesn't help the situation with airshows been cancelled! It always has been touch & go over the years for the arrows with review after review, have to wait and see what happens!

The Government have persisted-away many times more than the Red Arrows' budget in Covid job-retention scams & wasted/non-compliant PPE alone. Take the "Eat-out to help-out" scheme which comes with a free Lockdown2! The Red's should've applied for 9 separate 'Business Grants' coz they couldn't work or fly at home?
When it comes right down to it there are many more important things than the Red's to spend the budget on, but in terms of feelgood factor for the general population the Red's deliver value for money IMO! :thumb:

My daft idea for last year was for them to split into small sections which would fly to many destinations around the country each day doing flypasts

Good idea, C.24. It would give them much more exposure to Joe Public, without J.P having to fork out for the whole family to see them at, what for them, might a tough price to pay at an Airshow [when they happen].

Indeed, that's why 736NAS are disbanding! One of the craziest ideas for years, as 100 Sqn will still have to fulfill the FOST & other requirements!

Can anyone remember the last time there was a defence review, and the Red's disbanding wasn't mentioned?

Asking for a friend....

I’m struggling to see how the Reds only cost £15m a year?

By the time you factor in maintenance/engineering for 14/15 jets, fuel, support a/c flights, ground equipment costs, team wages, overseas training and not to mention the cost of keeping an entire base open just for them for the best part of 30yrs, the cost must be substantially more?

There are other units at scampton, not just the reds plus they are moving anyway.

Maybe so, but the other units don’t use the actual airfield. The up keep of the runway alone would be in the couple of millions and that’s not including upgrades or repairs.
