BOB Flypast 1990 Buckingham Palace Call Signs?
Afternoon All
I'm looking for the BOB Formation Flypast 1990 call signs over Buckingham Palace. Have being looking around on various sites but not found any information on the call signs used. Would be grateful if anyone could provide a list of call signs for the formations.
Regards

Back in 1990 the RAF BF produced a bound volume of the operation order for the flypast. The following is distilled from that order. Hope it gives what you seek. The order given is that flown over the palace. This is the 'fair weather' plan, which I believe was the one flown on the day.
Formation 1:
BBMF
Fighters BBMF 1 to 7
Lancaster as Lancaster
Formation 2:
3 x VC10 E 1 to 3
2 x Tornado E 4 to 5
4 x C130 E6 to 9
2 x Nimrod E10 to 11
4 x Buccaneer E12 to 15
4 x Canberra E16 to 19
2 x BAE125 E20 to 21
Formation 3
16 x Tornado F3 A1 to 16
16 x Hawk A17 to 32
16 x Tornado F3 B1 to 16
16 x Phantom B17 to 32
Formation 4
16 x Tornado GR1 C1 to 16
12 Harrier + 4 Sea Harrier C17 to 32
16 x Tornado GR1 D1 to 16
16 x Jaguar D17 to 32
Formation 5
Red Arrows Red 1 to 9
Formation 6
Lancaster
Formation 7
Spitfire and Hurricane
That's an awful lot of aircraft!

Thanks much appreciated for that, I was down at The Mall at the time and saw most of it but not all, never forgot the atmosphere with folks cheering and flag waving. Never to be forgotten with all those different aircraft types!

Aren't the letters & numbers in that list just a key for the diagram of the flypast in the bound volume, they can't be callsigns surely!

The document I quoted from is Operation order 9/90
Ref STC/8008/14/1/AD
Issued 151630Z Jan 90 from Headquarters Strike Command
It was signed by ACM P B Hine, and authenticated by AVM W J Wratten.
After a general introduction there are a number of Annexes which detail for make up of the various formations. In each annex there is a section noted as Routes and Timings.
In this part there is a subsection covering Callsigns and Frequencies. It was from here that I extracted the call sign information given in my post.
Finally, Annex W to the document summarises all the allocated call signs to each formation.
The summary I gave was presented in good faith, based on what might be assumed to be a correct document. It's up to you if you decide otherwise. If so, then I'm sure the OP would appreciate corrections.

I don't know about Buckingham Palace, but by the time they were over Abingdon, there were only eight Red Arrows.

Just a thought. Have you treid posting this on Pprune? Try the Aviation & Nostalgia section.
There are a host odexperts on there that might be able to confirm / refute the callsigns above.

Re: BOB Flypast 1990 Buckingham Palace Call Signs?
Been reading through, I have a memory that London City airspace was basically shut when the flypast happened, 168 aircraft at different heights and speeds, I'm wondering if callsigns were actually used apart from internal calls and when they were not in the formation corridors ie departing and returning to their bases
Re: BOB Flypast 1990 Buckingham Palace Call Signs?
Call signs are used on any stage of flight from a singleton to formations!
Re: BOB Flypast 1990 Buckingham Palace Call Signs?
...but can change, depending on the context and who you're talking to.
I think colt99 might be correct that they're inter-formation callsigns. Heck of a lot easier to put a call out to "Charlie one formation" rather than trying to remember that "Charlie one formation" is made up of four squadrons worth of Tornados, each with individual callsigns!
