AIM120 Training Rounds

Post by welshandy » Mon Sep 21, 2020 11:28 am

My 13 year old was looking at the recent Photo's taken at LN by various members. He asked me why on the F16's the AIM120's have fins attached but on the F15's they do not. I could not answer him, anybody know please. Thanks in advance.

Could be due to aerodynamic loads on the fins over a long period, for the F-15.

Were they actually AIM120s or were they an ACMI-style training pod? They often fit a dummy round on one shoulder pylon, and the training round on the other side.

I’ve read somewhere that when the AIM-120 is fitted to the wing tip rails of the F-16, the fins have to be fitted in order to stop buffeting of the wings due to the airflow passing over and around them.
