This is interesting! From the ' South China Morning Post':
"Rare footage of the Chinese aircraft carrier Liaoning was released on August 28, 2020. showing the vessel at sea with aircraft conducting a series of drills on the vessel."

First flight of the Chinese Navy AEW aircraft, designated Xian KJ-600. Likely there will be a carrier on-board delivery variant?

Without a doubt they based it on the E-2 design.

No doubt they also looked at the Russian Yak-44 design? It only existed as a mock-up.
