Re: Anyone Flown In A Vulcan?
I've done 11 flights in RAF Chipmunks, does that count?
Re: Anyone Flown In A Vulcan?
I flew in a VictorK2 over the North Sea refuelling 4 x Harriers whilst at Marham. But never managed a Vulcan trip!
Re: Anyone Flown In A Vulcan?

Re: Anyone Flown In A Vulcan?
My first job in the MoD was washing Vulcans at Scampton and my name was put down for a flight but my dad got posted to Finningley before that happened.
Re: Anyone Flown In A Vulcan?
Just wondered if anyone had a chance to fly in one, I grew up with the Vulcan and has been my main favourite aircraft since the 70's.

Hi Vulcan74
Thanks for the info... I will be surprised if there isn't at least one person on here that's flown on one.
Brian... didn't know that mate... that would have been nice... I had my name down for the Jaguar but sadly Finningley closed before it could happen

Tim
My dad put my name down, a long list apparently, when he was on 35 Squadron but I did get to to sit in a live Vulcan on dispersal that was plugged in and all lit up.

Hi Brian
That's impressive and a great memerory to have...not many people would have had the chance to witness that experience.
You must tell me more about it the next time I see you.

Like future Harrier pilots learning to hover in Whirlwinds at Ternhill in the late 1960's, but this is thread creep.

Re: Anyone Flown In A Vulcan?
Was fortunate to have a flight in a Vulcan whilst on *Star Camp* at Scampton in 1969. Six hour flight to northern Norway and back. This was the period when the RAF were giving up the nuclear role and the Royal Navy taking over with their nuclear submarines. XL425 gone but not forgotten.

A Nimrod MR2 while it still had its nuclear role, does that count?

More claustrophobic than the Victor to fly in?

Re: Anyone Flown In A Vulcan?
Assuming you were not part of the five man operational crew I would guess "jollies" were few and far between.
Did the Vulcan have a "jump seat" for a sixth person ?

Re: Anyone Flown In A Vulcan?
The Vulcan had two seats for sixth and seventh crew members though they were hardly jump seats. Flying as a “passenger” was not that much fun, sitting in the black hole freezing your butt off. The crew had AVS suits (air ventilated suits) to keep warm/cool according to individual taste so did not bother with the cabin conditioning, while the passenger who had no avs either sweated or froze, normally the later. In addition you sat facing inwards with your feet on the crew entrance door which normally had a leaky door seal sou you had ice cold air whistling around your feet.
Not much to see either unless you went low level and the captain allowed you to stand on the ladder between the seats and look out, which could be quite exciting.
Rangers were better since you knew you would be landing somewhere exotic, though when you landed, whilst the crew went off for a “well earned” cold beer, you still had to wrap up the bomber and fix any snags before you could join them.
Not as glamorous as it sounds, but I wouldn’t have done it any other way.

Does this include sitting in Vulcans on display at Museums?

I suspect the number of different people who have flown in a Vulcan and are still alive and a member of FC is quite short list.
Re: Anyone Flown In A Vulcan?
Be fair the Vulcan was retired in 1984, a mere 36 years ago. With the likely age of the aircrew I would hope that quite a lot of them are still alive a few in their late 50's and many more in their 60's.slogen51 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 18, 2020 6:48 amNor chipmunksNighthawke wrote: ↑Tue Aug 18, 2020 12:27 amNot being a Vulcan - see thread title - then I would guess not.
