1995 - Operation Deliberate Force is launched by NATO against Bosnian Serb forces. Two hundred sorties are flown during the first 24 hours, including the first combat missions flown by the Luftwaffe since World War II. Raids continued until September 14.
1994 - Lockheed and Martin Marietta announce their intention to merge. They will form Lockheed-Martin the following year.

1915 - the first French ace Adolphe Pegoud is killed in combat. He scored 6 victories.

1983 - a Korean Air Boeing 747 (Korean Air flight 007) is downed by Soviet Air Force Sukhoi Su-15s. According to investigations, the Korean Air plane had strayed off course and into Russian airspace near Sakhalin Island, and Soviet pilots claimed the plane had ignored warnings before being shot down. All 269 on board died.
1974 – The SR-71 Blackbird sets (and holds) the record for flying from New York to London in the time of 1 hour, 54 minutes and 56.4 seconds.
1953 - a B-47 Stratojet is refueled by a KB-47 in the first jet-to-jet aerial refuelling.
1939 - Germany invades Poland. The Luftwaffe plays a key tactical bombing role in neutralising Polish defences.

73 years ago today 92 was the first squadron to engage the Luftwaffe on what would be the turning point of the Battle of Britain. Since then the 15th of September has always been remembered as Battle of Britain Day. Ladies and Gentlemen I give you The Few. God bless them all.

3 years ago today, 15th December 2010 the remaining aircraft of the Harrier force took off from Cottesmore for their tour of East Anglian bases. Early casualties of the Government's Defense cuts, a very premature termination of a very capable aircraft and closure to an operational airfield.

1995 - Serb forces shoot down a Mil Mi-8 carrying the Bosnian foreign minister and a USAF F-16 Fighting Falcon.
1987 – 19-year-old West German pilot Mathias Rust evades Soviet Union air defenses and lands a private plane in Red Square in Moscow. He is immediately detained and is not released until August 3, 1988.

1995 – United States Air Force Captain Scott O'Grady's F-16 is shot down over Bosnia while patrolling the NATO no-fly zone.
1954 - Yugoslavian Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15s attack a Belgian Douglas DC-3, which lands in Austria.
1912 - The Lewis machine gun is first tested in an aircraft by the US Army. The results are extremely encouraging, and this weapon would go on to become the standard armament of many fighter aircraft during World War I.
