Tucano flying?

Post by iainpeden » Wed Feb 12, 2020 7:22 pm

I was driving south on the M1 - near J22 just north of Leicester at about 3 this afternoon and spotted what appeared to be a Tucano flying west to east.. It was at the usual lowish flight level and had that particular "sit" in the sky.

I know the RAF retired them last year, which is what surprised me, but wondered if any of the test units still had some for tasking.

Happy to be corrected but I don't think any are flying now. Was it a Texan you saw?

A g-info search returns G-ZFOO a homebuilt Tucano replica, which is still current.

yes but GINFO also shows,

"Date of "No Flight" Declaration:
13-Jun-2019" and no insurance.

Not sure if it's ever yet flown.

All the airframes at Linton were dismantled and engineless last photo I saw of them. assume the stored airframes at Shawbury are likely the same.

Thanks - that probably explains it. My recent knowledge of RAF training a/c is a bit lacking.

Aren’t CFS still operating a Tucano at Cranwell?

Only if it's a non-British one!

No, and can’t see why they would need to anyway as the type is no longer in service?!

When you’ve only been given a finite number of Texans at Valley (ie, you can’t just keep one in the shed at Cranwell as was done with the Tucano), and your examiners live at Cranwell, then there could be an argument to keep a one for (non-type specific) continuation training, depending on how a regulation was written.

I'd imagine the costs and challenge of operating and supporting a single aircraft fleet would preclude this, let alone it will no longer be certified after withdrawal from service. I've always believed that the CFS' role is to train flying instructors on in-service types hence again, can't see a role for a Tucano here.

CFS Exam Wg at Cranwell effectively standardise and audit the individual CFS instructors around the training establishment. They had a single Tucano at Cranwell before as a “hack”/currency machine.

No idea if the aircraft type has been removed from the military register as yet.

Do Boscombe Down still have a Tucano on strength?
