Bruntingthorpe closure

Post by PeteHemsley » Sat Feb 08, 2020 9:41 am

As announced on the socials, it seems like Bruntingthorpe is the stop aircraft ops and be turned purely into car storage. Such a shame, but money talks at the end of the day.

That's a shame, was there any time line on it?

I never made it to a fast taxi open day, wondering if they will do any this year? Their website says they are not sure if they will be.

The museum as been closed since around November, temporarily while some work is carried out.
Not sure if it's for the car transportation vehicles hub. They have issues over the years because of the amount car transporters on the local roads.

New contract was passed for the continuing of this and new system put in place. Not sure if a new entrance was in the plan for these lorries.

Brunti is definitely not closed its in a boom time if anything. Some major works in the pipeline on the track, the airfield as always kept the aviation link with site. And pretty sure that will continue.
This present closure of the museum i would say is just a temporary thing.

Then why have all of the volunteers who work there been told that it will cease to exist as of June this year with the show in May being put under the falling hammer too?

Someone should tell the Classic British Jets Collection. Presumably they're not part of "all the volunteers" who were told. https://www.facebook.com/46551848728541 ... 667905923/

Website states the museum is closed and doesn't know when it will reopen, but nothing about the taxi runs .

You note they say they haven’t been told anything. Nothing either way.

I know a member of another group who asked for clarification of the situation several weeks ago (after all, I suspect running some of the jets requires some planning, preparation and MONEY!); they’ve had no response back from the site owners last time I heard.

I also know a member of another team who has shown me the request they vacate the site by the summer (confirming what Pete has heard).

Anything heard from the Lightning Team? Be a shame if they have to lose their QRA hangar - could that be moved elsewhere? like Binbrook for example?

Not sure you'd want to move it there given there is no longer any runway left for jet runs, and it's too far away I'd imagine to get the footfall that Bruntingthorpe gets. In the ideal world, somewhere like Duxford would be perfect.

Duxford or Elvington.

In the current climate I’d probably suggest somewhere that is a national collection if possible. There appears to be far too much uncertainty around private collections, particularly post Shoreham (and that, to an extent, affects ground running events like Bruntingthorpe too).

Elvington would be the ideal location for the Lightnings and other fast taxi Aircraft. Doubt Duxford would have them.

I suspect Duxford's runway is too short for Lightning ground runs, or at least it would be over before it began as it were. Elvington is a nice idea though.
They can call it what they want
BUT ITS NOT A PROPER LIGHTNING

That’s assuming they were able to ground run them. Moving them and moving the structure wouldn’t be cheap.

For a non-National collection, Elvington at least probably has the space for the sheds, but again we’re assuming funds exist to deconstruct, move them and build them again.

Duxford or Elvington.
Good point that completely slipped my mind, Elvington would be superb, although it's some way away for me to see stuff at that airfield would be worth a visit. You've the runway and the atmosphere and wouldn't it be great if the shed could be taken there too.

As Duxford is a 'live' r/w you would run into issues with crowd proximity anyway. I assume Elvington wouldn't have that issue. Definitely a good idea to centralise assets & increase the footfall, but I imagine that was a factor in all the individual groups that have congregated at Bruntingthorpe?
Can't see this ending without the loss of some airframes...when & if the day comes. :(

For the Lightnings, there's nothing wrong with Duxford's runway, if they can land a B-52D there, surely a couple of non-flying Lightnings could engage afterburner for the brief seconds required to wow the crowd - regarding the crowd, they could just roll them out as an interlude in the flying display at their airshows - no issue with crowd lines. Granted it wouldn't be the same as seeing them from 50 foot or less away, but then I still have the tinnitus from being too close without ear defenders :D

Be a great shame to lose them, like we seem to have lost XH558 but that's another story.
