Nellis Red Flag 2020

Post by Doughnut » Thu Jan 02, 2020 4:16 pm

Like many others planning on a Nellis visit in March. Red Flag 20-2 is scheduled for 3rd March till 20th March.
From previous exercises can anybody confirm will the last day ie Friday 20th be a full mission or squadrons preparing to depart for home bases ?
Thanks Paul

I'm afraid I can't answer your specific question, although as someone else who is planning a visit around Red Flag 20-2 I noted that most of the tour companies are predicting those dates although they are not yet confirmed on the Nellis website itself, which still says TBD.

However buried deep in the Luke website, which I was looking at because of their open house planned for the weekend of March 21/22, I found a calendar entry showing that 62FS was deploying to Nellis for Fed Flag from 3-23 March, which strongly implies the main Red Flag exercise will indeed be the two weeks 9 - 20 March.

I'd be interested if anyone else is able to identify any other likely 20-2 participants..

Spanish Air Force will take part with Eurofighters from Ala 11 and Ala 14. Source: Spanish Air Force website that has an article about the deployment to Red Flad 20-2 in Nellis.

Is there any reason why 20-2 is so close to starting after 20-1 ends?

Hasn’t it always been like that, with the 3rd one taking place end of October into November ?

It used to be that they did back to back Red Flags with the participants from the first one departing on the Saturday and the next participants arriving the same day and on the Sunday. Great days!
In more recent times, XX-1 has been towards the end of January with XX-2 being in early March.

Red flag is not the priority at Nellis believe it or not. Weapons school and green flag are. Thats why the flags are in the worst time of the year weather wise wind, thunder storms etc if not on base then on the ranges. Weapons school and the ME are the main priorties

Can anyone tell me if flying 'normally' also takes place on weekends during Exercise Red Flag please,if so, is it 'normally' as busy or not as busy as weekdays?
Thanks in advance.

Fist Saturday prior to the start of the Red Flag exercise some players might do a familiarisation flight, but Red Flag missions are flown twice a week from Monday till Friday.

I was out there for week 2 of Red Flag a few weeks back, and yes not much over the weekend, especially as it was superbowl weekend.

For information for anybody reading, during weekdays bar the odd small gap it was pretty much continual flying. Red flag missions usually departed 13:00 and 20:00 ish daily and recovered a few hours afterwards, although of course with such a big package the early stuff (tanker/AWACS-AEW/ISTAR/EA/bombers etc.) departed first with the players departing in waves after with usually the aggressors the last to depart, and this was spread over an hour or so). Outside of that weekdays you of course have all the FWS/test etc. F15/16/22/35 A10's etc. all the time outside of the red flag missions with an early morning afterburner wake up call at 06:15 most days!

RF 20-1 is now over... does anybody have an idea of the US units who will take part to RF 20-2 ?

For the foreign air forces : Spain, Italy, Germany... others ?

Thank you ;-)

Just a couple of minor points The Germans refer to the Tornado IDS as the PA200 from memory, but the ECR as such... Also only the US Navy flies the EA-18G, USMC has faith in the future with F-35.
