Marshalls move

Post by 22A » Sun Oct 27, 2019 12:27 pm

Apologies if this post is in the wrong section, or if posted already..
Announced on BBC Radio Cambs this week that Marshalls will leave Cambridge before 2030.
Their new base will be one of; RAF Wyton, IWM Duxford or Cranfield.
12,000 homes can then be built on the Cambridge Airport site.

I’d put my money on Cranfield. If you look at the £Billions of money they can make from those houses I’m sure the money will be there to make Cranfield what they want.

I remember it from at least 10 years ago when I was working at Wyton.

There's been plenty of rumours over the years, but its official now. The pressure, and amount of money on offer, has simply been too much to refuse.

At say £100,000 per home development profit x 12,000 homes that's £1200,000,000 = £1.2bn. A nice sum for retirement or investment in other business opertunities with or without continuing their aircraft activities! The actual profit could be more or less, but still a serious amount of money.

Had a lecture with one of the Marshalls pilots, he said Cranfield and Duxford are very unlikely

Spoke with a friend last weekend who works in the Marshalls management team, said Duxford was a non-starter, Cranfield very likely!

Because of course, Cambridge needs more houses because the roads are so empty.

Wonder what that will do to my 25 mile hour and twenty commute time....

I could but I live 10 miles from Newmarket and need a car to reach our branch offices when needed, so not a viable option!

Persimmons, I believe, have a business model that for every 3 houses they build 2 are pure profit, that's around 66% profit on every house! No wonder they were the first builder to make £1 billion profit in a year and after building around the same number of houses the previous year!

I could imagine Duxfords runway length and location could be a bit of an issue for regular ops.

Would it be possible that the General Flying Operations from Cambridge such as the flying group, flying schools etc would move to Duxford with the MADG Business re-locating to a new location.

I have read with interest the various arguments on relocation of Cambridge but without details of the implications it would appear Wyton should be the front runner for various reasons ( airfield acceptability ,long runway ,pavement strength ,available hangars.space for expansion.Opertunity for reduced relocation costs. My thoughts.

But what state is Wyton airfield in though? When I last drove past it didn't exactly look as though it was under 'care and maintenance'?

Also, I'd have thought any move to Wyton would only be short term as its well known Wyton itself is under threat from housing development. Once they've finished destroying Alconbury, Oakington, Bassingbourn, etc then Wyton is an obvious target for yet another new town.
