I'm sure it's true, but it's a non-story. Squawking 7700 is almost always precautionary, and is a very common event. It's very rare that it represents a genuine emergency.

While at Waddington yesterday a report on my scanner to the ground crash crew told them, a Sentinel was landing with electrical fumes in the rear cabin.

Very disappointing that they were given the tip off; I doubt they have a correspondent monitoring flight tracking software or military radio frequencies.

The fact that the article first appeared whilst the aircraft may still have been airborne is distressing too; had it been a catastrophic problem leading to the loss of the airframe (how many Sentinel sorties are there on an average day?), there’s a good chance all the families would have seen it plastered in the press before they could be notified officially and with appropriate compassionate support.

Having heard the initial Mayday call I’m glad they sorted it and made it home.

But of course you can get it to alert when a 7700 is broadcast, I wouldn't be surprised if a "correspondent" has at least this set up.

Unfortunately the advent of the online trackers has spawned an equivalent of the paparazzi, they have no interest in aviation and who's sole intention is to get their name in the papers regardless of the feelings of others.
