Google Earth

Post by Snoop 95 » Wed Aug 14, 2019 9:47 am

Have been browsing the airbases as seen on Google Earth and note that RAF Marham has one solitary aircraft in the shape of an F35, RAF Coningsby has 9 Typhoons on the apron and what look like 2 Harriers, although the photo is dated 2018/19. Waddo has 4.5 E3's, 2 xRC135's and a Sentinel. Brize has 3 VC10's, 4 C17's and 2 Voyagers.
Mildenhall I counted 25 aircraft of various types, Lakenheath 13 F15's, then I decided that I had beter get a life and do some work!

And at Duxford, Google Earth show's the old AirSpace hangar, not the new extended one that opened in 2007.

Until recently updated the Biggin Hill pic was taken during an airshow, it was great.

Some may not appreciate that by clicking on the year/date box in the bottom lhd corner, you can chose which image you view from a range of dates.

All airfields/airports in Greece are pixelated along with a good few in France.

I quite enjoy looking at airfields on Google Earth Pro (desktop app), especially going back in time and seeing the differences. For example Mildenhall has images from 1945, 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2015(2) and 2018.

A few years ago when you used Google Earth to look at Huntingdon, there was a silhouette of a Lancaster flying over the river!

I find it quite comforting in some ways that it is not always correct. For years it showed a door, red one, in a wall of my house. I haven't looked recently online but there wasn't a door there just now when I was in the room. I wonder, should I ask Alice!

Except one Thunder....I won't divulge on here in case the HAF notice ;) PM me and I'll let you know. I go to this Island most years and it's in a very strategic position and I have several shots taken of F16's in the revetments(visitors most week days from the mainland) whilst taxiing to/from the terminal to the active + a resident F4 which moves around occasionally.

P.S. An A7 has now joined the resident gate guards...F4,TF104,F5,RF84 :)
It's so nice to be insane...nobody asks you to explain.

Some in the Netherlands too. However in many cases, I've only checked France, it is possible to scroll back to earlier images that are not pixelated, some are only 5 or 6 years old.

Could this be due to the different versions of GE that we are using? Using GE Pro and I cannot find any Gr fields that have their latest image pixelated apart from Andravida, and that wasn't pixelated as recently as 2107.

Good information 'Marty Mc Freeman'! If you're anywhere near Waddington 'next week' can you let me know what the weather was before I leave tonight?
Seriously though, good info' for trip-planning in far-off lands. :thumb:

No not time-traveller Mark, just as you said - 'old' ;)

And if you are unlucky enough to find the airfield that you're interested in is actually pixelated (like some of the French ones were) then using Street View gives you a side-ways boundary-look 'under' that pixelation :halo: (and you can zoom in using a tablet device)
