Dutch F-16 shoots itself!
LOL You couldn't write it but photo shows some airframe damage. Looks like it's in line with the HUD by the bottom edge of the rescue arrow.
The accident report will be interesting reading.
The Royal Netherlands Air Force F-16 suffered “considerable damage” following the accident during a training exercise. At least one round caused damage to the plane’s exterior after the pilot attempted to hit a practice target at Leeuwarden air base. Part of the munition was also found in the engine.

Re: Dutch F-16 shoots itself!
When I was on 54(F) one of our jags came back from the range with damage caused by a single round, hit the aircraft several times.
Re: Dutch F-16 shoots itself!
I doubt the target was at Leeuwarden - its landlocked and just outside a largeish town. Vlieland is an island offshore from Harlingen, just adjacent to Leeuwarden. On the maps it looks lke a gunnery range in which case I would speculate that a dive strafe run led to a projectile richochetting off the surface. IIRC that was quite a regular occurrence with Hunters and their Aden canon pack.

Re: Dutch F-16 shoots itself!
Damage pattern looks like both aircraft and offending shell were travelling in the same direction rather than richochetting off the surface

Re: Dutch F-16 shoots itself!
It has happened quite a few times in the past. Notably to F-84F Thunderstreaks while doing gunnery with their six .50 guns. If memory serves me rightbig john wrote: ↑Tue Apr 09, 2019 10:40 amHe's not the first one.

, I remember reading that it usually meant that the pilot got too low during his strafing run.
The pilot of F-104G D-8047 that crashed on December 1st 1981 due to an explosion in the M-61 Vulcan cannon is a bike-riding friend of mine.
