USAF to buy more Eagles

Post by slogen51 » Wed Feb 20, 2019 6:35 am

USAF are apparently buying a few Advanced eagles according to :-

https://www.popularmechanics.com/milita ... -new-f-15/

Only eight initially then enough to equip a wing of F-15EX and F-15CX.
Not stealthy but highly manoeuvrable and heavily armed.

Wonder where they will be based?

It’s a great idea (you have to love the F-15) and been mooted for a while. It is in short how Israel have been utilising there Eagles in a multi aircraft strategy for ages - using them as force multiplers - however I’ll believe this when I see it!

I believe there's planned to be two squadrons of 35s due to replace the 15Cs, but would be nice if they were here though!

Does anyone know what is actually happening in 2020 at Lakenheath, are all the F-15's going to be replaced by the F-35, and if so will they have the same amount of F-35's as when equipped with F-15's?

I'll bet they all go to the Guard and Kadena. If any come to Europe it wont be the heath. 5 Sqs 2 x Es 2 x 35s and 1 x X It wont happen.

No chance at all they will come to Lakenheath. Long term future will be the 2 F-35 and 2 F-15 squadrons, and when the 2 F-15 squadron's time is up, I suspect they won't be replaced with anything and it'll just be the 2 F-35 squadrons remaining.

The article states that the new F-15X will work with both the F-22 and F-35, more or less acting as it’s missile truck. So the Lakenheath E’s could go back Stateside or The Far East and be replaced with the X’s, making Lakenheath a F-15X/F-35A base. With the current Russia situation the US may be looking at expanding it’s presence in Europe once again, so I wouldn’t be ruling anything out. However they haven’t even approved the funding yet so any talk is purely speculative

Good post Thunder. My money would be on any new F-15s being positioned towards the Far-East with the general trend of moving towards China.

The F22 line shut and there is attrition. The F35 line can't churn them out fast enough. But they want to significantly increase deployed airframes. The unpalatable (to some) answer is more F15s. Problem is the threat environment is getting tougher: inevitably the opposition is deploying stealth. So apart from fly by wire, modern RADAR and Electronics there might be a need to semi-stealth new F15s, just like the B1. That would require some internal carriage of munitions with the provision to add pylons and external stores. Boeing's proposal for a semi-stealth F15 was turned down, but now?
