Tornado farewell flypast February 2019
Re: Tornado farewell flypast February 2019
Hello scramble_al70
Are you really planning to leave warm, sunny Italy and travel to the UK? I thought that I was daft, planning a sixty mile trip to see nine aircraft whiz past, then disappear into the dark cloud.
As I understand the published plan, 9 will just fly through, possibly somewhere close to the airfield at RAF Cranwell, returning to RAF Marham.
With nine aircraft back at base that might be a better option for photographs rather than visiting the College.
What ever you eventually decide to do, safe journey.

First post on here took 10 years, now 2 in 12 hours
Looking to the 28th for the 9 ship, does anyone have any details yet? I though North Wales was a long way to travel but seeing someone on here coming from Italy puts me to shame
Cheers,
Pat

I was at RAF Marham on Tuesday and the field directly off the end of runway 01 was closed, strictly off limits. Parking was being allowed on the grass verge on White Lane which allowed photography of landing aircraft if using runway 01.
Despite this field being closed the land owner was allowing cars to be parked in his field adjacent to the airfield boundary. Please be responsible and respect the generosity of the land owner.
Alex
Suggest you check the RAF twitter feed, or Fighter Control website for up to date information. NOTAMs will be published regarding times and routes taken early next week.

They will likely stay in 9 formation and flyover when returning to Marham before breaking to land so if you were coming all the way from Italy I would suggest going to Marham to watch them hopefully fly over after Cranwell and then recover. As a previous poster said if you park in the farmer's field who is allowing viewing access right on the fence at the south of the base you will also then be able to get close-up taxiing shots of them going back to their HAS site.

Re: Tornado farewell flypast February 2019
Thank you all for the quick answers!
I love the UK and I come at least two or three times a year, both for airplanes and for the wildlife. In Italy it is not easy to photograph airplanes or wildlife!
Unfortunately I can not wait for Monday to buy the flight from Rome to Stansted, so for this reason I tried to have as much information as possible.
Thanks again to everyone!

Personally I would go for the flypast locations (Filton or Abbey Wood) than a hill as will be lower and closer. Broadly approach from the Severn and then east towards the M4.

After tomorrow's farewell tour (Scotland?), is that it for the Tonkas, will they then be permanently grounded? I was under the impression that 30th of March was the official retirement?

No, they should still be flying through until some time in March (I don't recall the exact date, but I'm sure I've seen it mentioned on FC before). There will also be a nine-ship flypast on February 28th from Marham to RAFC Cranwell.
Re: Tornado farewell flypast February 2019
Not seeing a lot of info for the Scottish leg. Has anyone a pointer to details of Notam/route/timings?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Tornado farewell flypast February 2019
Hi, are there any times published for the flypast over Cranwell at all? Also any reason why a 9 ship over Cranwell? Graduation day? Any info would be much appreciated as I would love to see the 9 ship over Cranwell, I did manage to see the 3 ship yesterday over Waddo but this would be great to see before they are gone forever, I have so many good memories of the tornado on the east coast bombing ranges and at airshows. I'm sure as many other people will agree, they will be sorely missed once they retire.
Re: Tornado farewell flypast February 2019
There is still no NOTAM for the route tomorrow, i guess because there are only three locations, a notam is not required?
I Guess high level to Leuchars, mid to Tain, then stay low until Lossie, then high level RTB?

Re: Tornado farewell flypast February 2019
As of this morning, there still doesn't appear to be a NOTAM for the Scottish flypasts, so I'm guessing there won't be one released. I'd seen it suggested before that they may just be treating the Scottish flypasts as typical low-flying, so no need for a specific NOTAM, but I don't know enough about the process to say whether that's an accurate assessment.
All we know so far is:
Leuchars Station (between 1115-1130)
RAF Tain (between 1130-1145)
RAF Lossiemouth (between 1145-1200)
...and the Lossie Media & Comms team are hopefully going to release details of direction, timings and (possibly) height of flypasts tomorrow morning after aircrew briefing.
EDIT:
...and for anyone out for today's flypasts, neither the IX(B) or camo schemes will be flying today.

Thanks vulcanxl425 - I'd checked again this morning but didn't see that. Checking again, I see I had one of the wrong boxes unticked!
Re: Tornado farewell flypast February 2019
For today. They were 3 mins early against the NOTAM times as they went over Buckinghamshire.
