Indeed or for us shuld we ever need to expand.

I'm think now of all the complaints should the Reds move to Valley, Ooo it used to be so quiet & peaceful here now look at those horrible aircraft spoiling our peace & tranquillity.

If the Americans want to base things at our bases they can darn well pay for it!
What a naïve statement. They do already (RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall, RAF Feltwell, RAF Fairford etc.....), they funded a good amount of the original HAS programme allowing forward deployment of types such as F111's to Boscombe Down.

I guess we could tell them, against and contrary to NATO agreements with forward deploying to European bases (to protect us!!!!!), we could insist they pay, whereupon they tell us to f*** off and withdraw from all the current bases......

The base is knackered due to years of cuts, neglect and a lack of investment.

Only thing we can hope for is if someone buys it that will preserve the heritage with the intent to continue to use it for aviation.

To just build houses on it would be criminal.

In what way is it naiive? The post I quoted talked about basing new squadrons here, why would HMG pay for for a base upgrade if it's the US that want to base something here?

I was on Central Flying School at Scampton in the late 80s and very early 90s.
We had a line of up to 20+ JP 3/5, Tucano and Bulldogs.
For up to 6 times a day, our planned programme was at best 'disrupted', at worse scrapped to accommodate RAFAT.
Often our aircraft landed away at Waddington as the airspace was blocked from the moment the aircrew walked for the Hawks.
Great bunch of engineers, but the Sqn comes with operational baggage...
Can't see Waddington or Coningsby accepting such constraints.
With the impending expansion of 4FTS to two Hawk Squadrons, one (possibly eventually two) Texan Squadron and the Jupiters of MMTU, Valley and Mona are about to become very busy indeed and, quite apart from the daily demand for exclusive use of a large chunk of VATA, neither airfield could possibly accommodate the frequent disruption to its flying programme which RAFATs activities would entail.

Totally agree about the reasons why the Reds shouldn't go to Vallley. There are plans for 4 Sqn to up the sortie rate over the next year, how successful it turns out is another matter. There are a number of issues to be sorted out before that happens. Ref the formation of a new Squadron, the only thing that might happen is 4 Sqn being split for administrative reasons. No more T.2s are planned and servicability needs to be greatly improved on the ones in use.
The only time the Texans have left there hangar is for ground runs etc and the Families day photo shoot.
Bottom line is that the Reds need an airfield to themselves, hence the move back to Scampton from Cranwell. Otherwise they disrupt any other Unit to an unacceptable level. MoD have to get this move right otherwise they will be doing the same again in a few years.

Re - Fairford I rather think inflexible nature of USAF ops there [bomber deployments/U2 swapovers] becoming more constraining as activity increases and base becomes fully operational again [2021] with RC135's etc. means its totally incompatible with Reds needs [ notwithstanding the airspace conflicts mentioned by the Luxton's earlier post].
Although there have been a few transits there hasn't been a "based" RC-135 at Mildenhall for over 4 weeks. This marks the first time since 1967 when none have been detached in the UK. May only be temporary but on the other hand may be a bad sign for the future?

Just a thought, did the USA reduce the RC 135 fleet by 3 and we took up the slack by acquiring 3? As there is a strong USA/UK Intelligence link does the USAF need now to permanently base one in Mildenhall/UK. So Fairford might be upgraded but not necessarily for RC135s.

Maybe the USAF RC-135 will go to Waddington, with Mildenhall closing.

Seriously chaps , the RC's are going to fairford and from what the 51sq chaps said at RIAT so are the RAF ones also, you only have to look at the amount of jobs now available at Fairford to see it's all moving forward rapidly, the RAF personal living at Fairford at the moment have all been told they need to move out by September 2021 at the latest ( sooner if they can ) so maybe we can all stop living in denial and get back to the subject at hand.

At the requested of some, I've added Hangar , Hangars, Hangared into word censoring so if anyone tries to spell the three words with a 'e' it auto corrects. Just hope no one wants to have a topic about the clothes type

I'll leave the last few posts for a few hours until people have been made aware then I'll deleted them :thumb:

Err yes I know there's plenty of Hawks there at the moment, I'm just quoting the typical line printed in the local press from Mr Evans, Davis (TIC) aged 64 Retired.

Same as people that protest about the increase in noise at Lakenheath when F22, F35's etc are sent on a 2 week deployment.
