Not sure if this has already been covered, but Boeing has pitched an 'F-15X' to the USAF...
The strategy would mimic what Boeing did with its Block III F/A-18 Super Hornet: taking an old concept, but boosting the jet fleets to be more potent in current and future missions with a larger variety of weapons, extended range, advanced targeting and sensor systems, and better fuel efficiency, among other enhancements.

Are there any F/A-18 Super Hornets in the USAF? I thought they were all USN or USMC?

 My apologies, I've misread it, they want to do similar to the Super Hornets! Amended

Sounds like a great idea to me as things are getting out of hand with the F-35 price besides it’s just another stealth bomber and there aren’t enough Raptors for air superiority to go around. Why not maint is already trained on them. Except a few new changes. But we know politics will get involved and it’s all for not

The EA-18G belong to the USN, there is some VAQ units that are jointly manned by both airforce and naval personnel but the a/c are owned by the Navy. The USMC don’t operate the any Super Hornet variant.

The unit costs continue to fall so not ‘out of hand’ at all. The price will be below $100m by Lots 14 and 15 which makes it cheaper than a 737-800 and less than a quarter of the cost of a 777-9.

The issue here is what mix of platforms you want on your frontline, once air supremacy has been gained then it makes sense to use less stealth like aircraft which carry greater ordnance.
