Can The Red Arrows Land 3 Abreast?
Can The Red Arrows Land 3 Abreast?
Hello All
Can the Red Arrows land 3 abreast onto the runway?
Can the Red Arrows land 3 abreast onto the runway?
Re: Can The Red Arrows Land 3 Abreast?
I suspect that H&S would not allow it - but, otherwise, if runway wide enough . . . . why not.

Literally three-abreast would be extremely challenging to do, even if the runway was comfortably wide enough. Can you imagine landing an aircraft whilst your head is turned at 90°watching the guy next to you...?
Even when they land in pairs, the 'wingman' will be a little behind the lead. When the Spanish Aguilla team do their impressive formation landing, the formation is three-aircraft wide, but the jets are arranged in vics (chevrons), not in line abreast.

If they wanted to I'm sure they would, but the final run in and break would then require a rejoin back into the 9 and then another split which would be time consuming and look messy.
I want 2% of GDP and I want it NOW!

Patrulla Aguila do it as part of their standard display so why not?

Fair comment.

Hello All
Thanks for that, I've seem them take off in threes, just wondered if they could land in threes.

Re: Can The Red Arrows Land 3 Abreast?
They could land as a vic but it wouldn’t really be neat because any formation landing involves building in nose-tail seperation just before touchdown in case there is a nosewheel steering hardover on landing. So, 2&3 would have to drop back from 1, then 3 would have to drop back from 2. It wouldn’t look pretty. A formation landing is only really practiced for the occasion when you would look to recover a formation in bad weather and didn’t have time to shoot multiple ILS or PAR.
Re: Can The Red Arrows Land 3 Abreast?
The reason that the Team lands has singletons is safety.
When they come into land the odd jets (Reds1,3,5,7,9) move over to one side of the runway with the even jets (Reds 2,4,6 and 8) moving to the other side.
This leaves a gap down the middle of the runway clean of any aircraft in case of one of the Hawks having a brake problem and has to do a roll through before (hopefully not) hitting the barrier at the end of the runway.
The risk of land has a "Vic" is if a jet has trouble on touchdown there's nowhere to run off and miss the other jets.

Didn't something like that happen to the Flecce Tricalori at RIAT one year? A G91 stuck his nose up the tailpipe of the one in front,
