They have some scanners for sale with big reductions but I don't think they cover mil.frequencies.

Not the Maplins Holiday Camp of "Hi-de-Hi" TV fame, but a retail outlet (aka shop). I think I'd miss the TV comedy more than the shop, but very sad for all their employees. Blame Amazon the on-line source of everything, not the river!

Re: MAPLIN CLOSURE
such a shame,i remember when radio shack closed down and now maplins, soon we will only have amazon and then once they have a monopoly they can charge whatever they like and we as consumers will suffer
Re: MAPLIN CLOSURE
Amazon is made up of thousands of independent sellers, as with the likes of eBay so that shouldn’t be a problemBlackjack56 wrote:such a shame,i remember when radio shack closed down and now maplins, soon we will only have amazon and then once they have a monopoly they can charge whatever they like and we as consumers will suffer

Re: MAPLIN CLOSURE
Even with the discounts I saw when I went in to have a look, the scanners and accessories still ended up more expensive than pretty much anywhere else. They were handy when you needed something desperately and couldn't wait for delivery, but I've never found a bargain in there.
Another vote for CPC for connectors etc.

I always used to visit the Staines branch when the Doris was in Debenhams etc and more recently became a regular visitor to the King's Lynn Maplin for various cable adapters - always found the staff quite knowledgeable and helpful.
I for one will miss them?

Re: MAPLIN CLOSURE
i agree with kyleG,i was recently looking to buy a uniden scanner and Maplins were at least £20 more expensive than ebay sellers, which is where i ended up buying one, although it is still a shame to see them go as they were handy for cables/connectors etc.
Re: MAPLIN CLOSURE
I'm with Slogen , I used to go into the Staines branch .. then moved up to the Middle .. now got Solihull .. always found better deals on their website to be honest

Re: MAPLIN CLOSURE
A shame for those working there, but as a company they were their own worst enemy, even now they have a fake up to 60% off sale where most stuff is still more expensive than elsewhere...scammers, they were good up to about 15 years ago then they just became rip-off city

All I can say is
BRING BACK TANDY
Seriously it is bad when shops closes, as it puts hard workers on the dole, hope they have a find work soon. Been there and its NOT fun. Yet again bad management from the top, that's also for toys r us and other closing shops.

Poppycock!airfixpilot wrote:Yet again bad management from the top, that's also for toys r us and other closing shops.
You don't think it might actually be due to the fact that people are buying more and more things from internet suppliers who have far lower overheads and hence can be far more competitive price wise.
It's the same old left wing gibberish to always blame the management.
ps Thanks for giving me reason to say 'Poppycock'. It's a very underused word!

Re: MAPLIN CLOSURE
All too easy to blame failing businesses on so-called bad management but it often isn't the case. As Chris correctly noted, falling footfall is a big contributor these days with people spending where they can save most - online. If you run a business you try to keep it going so whilst ultimately, management may have not watched the signs close enough, it may just be down to timing of them giving in and shutting down rather than bad management. Linked but two different things.

Have to agree with Chris too
Having just retired from Royal Mail, I know only too well the difference the internet has made to peoples' buying/delivery habits
Adapt or die is the current motto for many sectors

Yeah it's sad. The net has taken over, computers have taken over. I hate going to those self service things in the supermarket & the machines in the bank. I can use them i just prefer dealing & speaking to a person!!!

I know a couple who run a small computer shop and are always moaning about people on the net undercutting them.Blackcat1 wrote:Yeah it's sad. The net has taken over, computers have taken over. I was somewhat amazed the other day where they went off to Currys to look at an American style freezer then happily ordered it from the net!
