Re: F35 noise protest
Was there ever a village called Bentwaters then? I thought it was just a row of cottages and no church!

Bentwaters was originally named RAF Butley when construction began but renamed after Bentwaters Cottages which used to stand where the main runway was built.

I just cannot believe that.seven wrote:F-35's are most definitely louder than a Victor. Different sound if that makes sense, but most definitely louder!

Noise per se' is subject to the recipient's audible perception. One person may consider a sound to be loud & another adjacent person be comfortable with it. A third basic Category is persons who 'whine' about any noise they don't want, be it once a year music events or jets!....Clearly, aircraft 'loudness' is linked to the 'type' of noise, location of generated noise-vs-receiving ear/instrument, general volume, frequency, pitch, local topography, presence of reflectors/absorption, ambient temperature, air pressure/density, moisture content & the performance of the recipient's ears!
The more scientific version is:-
a) In acoustics, loudness is the subjective perception of sound pressure. More formally, it is defined as, "That attribute of auditory sensation in terms of which sounds can be ordered on a scale extending from quiet to loud."
b) Loudness depends on the amplitude of the sound wave. The larger the amplitude the more energy the sound wave contains therefore the louder the sound. it also depend on it's frequency and the pitch of sound.
c) Pitch and loudness may occasionally appear similar but they are not exactly the same. They differ on the basis of their tone quality. The pitch of a sound depends on the frequency while loudness of a sound depends on the amplitude of sound waves.
d) Sound loudness is a subjective term describing the strength of the ear's perception of a sound. It is intimately related to sound intensity but can by no means be considered identical to intensity. The sound intensity must be factored by the ear's sensitivity to the particular frequencies contained in the sound.
You can see the subject of 'loudness' is so subjective, no 2 people can ever agree on the same day at the same location much less historically! Regards, Professor Beaker.
PS:- Why did they call RAF..................................... Oh ! never mind.

Certainly I know from experience having lived in Carterton that although the A400Ms are scientifically quieter than the older generation aircraft that were based at Brize, the noise is actually much more distinctive and noticeable.

Just for interest
Quite some years back the Manor House at Barnack, which is on the extended centreline of RAF Wittering was up for sale and after some time the new owners were given a large grant to install double glazing.
Villagers around RAF Cottesmore have also been assisted to double glaze their property.
Neither airfield now presents a noise hazard.
It seems that that the third runway for Heathrow is moving into the construction phase. This raises in my mind two questions;
Should perfectly good houses be destroyed when there is a current lack of housing?
Why are buildings under the flight path unable to receive money to protect the occupants from noise pollution?
