Historical aviation images
Hi all,
A lady I know is currently in the process of uploading her late fathers archive of historical aviation photographs onto Flickr, she currently has just over 200 on there at the moment and I think she has another 4,000 to get through . I know she'd certainly appreciate some visits to the page because she is unable to identify many of the aircraft and locations in the photographs. She'd certainly appreciate any comments on the page & it's certainly well worth a look because there are some very interesting pictures on there.

Thanks for sharing the Link
Not a member of Flickr so can't comment on their but please pass on my thanks to the lady concerned.
Some real gems on there great memories of the first air tattoos at North Weald, and the stuff at Farnborough, Southend Wethersfield and Lakenheath. We must have been stood close by when some of these were taken. Happy days.
Thanks again

This could be a quite fun to fill in the blanks of a winter evening. Most types easily identifiable by folks on here.
Shameless self promotion on Flickr : https://www.flickr.com/photos/spuggs
Re: Historical aviation images
Absolutly fascinating how can we help this lady
Re: Historical aviation images
Thanks for the link, some interesting images on there already
Cheers - Paul.

Re: Historical aviation images
Some amazing shots there, well worth a few minutes of anyone's time. Shame some seem to be reversed and inverted but even so. Tankbuster please pass on some encouragement for your friend to continue.
In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.
Re: Historical aviation images
These are fantastic and some of the old jets are right up my street - B-47s, F-101, B-45 - love all this old cold war stuff!
Cheers

Re: Historical aviation images
I will certainly pass on to Lynn regarding how much the images are appreciated.
Her late father Alf was in the Royal Observer Corps and he was a very keen aviation enthusiast, he was also interested in photography in general.
He left behind multiple boxes of photographs, slides, and even undeveloped films. Not just on aviation, but thousands of photographs of people and places and many other subjects going back many years, some of the photo's are really fascinating. She is gradually getting through the images and putting them of flickr when time allows her to.
The main page for all of the images is here... https://www.flickr.com/photos/47073620@N06/ as you flick through the pages there are several real gem aircraft images that haven't been put in the aircraft album yet.
Cheers for the encouragement as I'm sure that is what fuels her enthusiasm to keep ploughing through all of her fathers photo's.
Cheers,

Re: Historical aviation images
The collection that is being discussed is a wonderful social document. Looking at the non aviation photographs it looks as if a number of them were taken in East Angla. Regarding the aviation images they are from several locations again around East Anglia , some certainly from Wethersfield and Mildenhall, as well as a fair number from London Airport, there are several from the old North side of the Airport. As the person concerned was in the ROC, there are several from Duxford (pre IWM)and from Stradishall both used by the ROC for summer camps and also from Farnborough and Shuttleworth Perhaps some of the older readers can identify other locations
But enough rambling, please convey to the lady concerned that they are greatly appreciated and hope she manages to upload both aviation and non aviation related images.

Many of the non aviation ones were indeed taken around North East Essex, and further afield too. Alf Jeffries the photographer lived in Brightlingsea, and also Colchester.nhoenich wrote:The collection that is being discussed is a wonderful social document. Re: Historical aviation images
Some real jems amongst this collection and a great trip down memory lane. Thanks to Alf for taking them, Lynn for sharing them and to you TankBuster for the link.
I remember the B-47E 20581 and saw it several times. It was based at Brize Norton and assigned to the 3920th Combat Support Group/Wing from Aug'61 to July'64 but not as a nuclear bomber. Its purpose was to provide senior 7th Air Division staff officers with flying time as they were required to remain qualified on the B-47 in order to hold command positions. (The 7th Air Division was the organisation which exercised operational control over the B-47 `Reflex` force in the UK.) 581 was 1 of 6 B-47E's assigned to the 3920th for this purpose over the period 1961 to '65 although the number on strength fluctuated according to requirements.
The photo shows 581 in its normal "lightweight" non - combat configuration - no drop tanks with tail cannons removed. The 6 "lightweights" flew regularly, conducting multiple approaches and visits to the other UK SAC bases as well as making static appearances at USAF Armed Forces Day shows. For example, on Sat 9 June'62 I noted 581 visiting Greenham Common.
The 81TFW F-101C 41490 was shot circa '60 to '62 - the solid squadron tail colour being the clue.
As far as I'm aware it was a Bentwaters based a/c rather than Woodbridge.
The F-104 60912 - Bentwaters Armed Forces Day May '60, F-102A 61253 was at the same show.
81TFW T-33 also looks like a Bentwaters show - last of the Wing's T-33's left the unit in late '66. The Blue Angels, Bentwaters as well - think I saw the `Angels there in 1973.
KB-50J 90390. This served with the 420th Air Refuelling Sqdn at Sculthorpe April'58 to March'64. The lack of sqdn markings and 0 - prefix to the tail number suggest it was taken in '58/59 but I can't nail the location at the moment.
RB-45C 8035 47BW,84BS Sculthorpe - Wethersfield Armed Forces Day June'57.
B-45A 7065 47BW,85BS Sculthorpe - date is 1958 or earlier, location unknown. A/c was scrapped at Lakenheath in Oct'58.
looking forward to more.

P.S Lynn uploaded a few more aircraft images on there today of some USMC helicopters on an unidentified aircraft carrier. She is planning to get a few more aircraft images on there before Christmas too .

And there's plenty more where that came from!
Re: Historical aviation images
The USMC carrier is the USS Guadalcanal (LPH-7) in Southampton on 26 October 1975.
Aircraft on board were:-
HMM-263 CH46F 156472/2 157651/5 157652/6 157665/21
HMM-263 CH53D 157745/32 156954/33 157742/30 157738/31 156963/34 156962/35 156955/36
HMM-263 UH1N 158782/24 159196/25
HMM-263 AH1J 157793/40 157765/42 157798/44 157797/46
USN CH46F 155313/
Ones in red are seen in the pictures - the UH-1s identifiable by serial, AH-1s by quantity and the others by code.
