Just a bit of trivia really but since 91-0332 has returned from deployment recently some extra letters have appeared on the fins :-

on the Left/starboard fin the letters "AEW" and "EMXS" on the port tail:-

wondering what the meanings are?

Shame the photo show EMXS Mike :Oops: Apparently it stands for Expeditionary Maintenance Squadron and AEW usually stands for Airborne Early Warning.

AEW = Air Expeditionary Wing

EMXS = Expititionary Maintenance Squadron

Port is left (both four letters) and starboard is right (both longer than four letters)... ;)

Extreme pedantism, only Naval aviators use left and right on aircraft. so as to avoid confusion when working with ships. :P ;)

Well caught Mike :thumbs:

That's 4 things I have learned from this post ;)

What those two sets of letters mean, and (finally) what sides Port and Starboard are to a landlubber like me :lol:

Cheers :thumb:

Paddyboy :clap:

Actually, we went away from port and starboard in the RAF a long time ago - a bit tricky at the time changing ingrained habits but it did bring us into line with most of the rest of the world.

Regardless of who uses which method, port = left and starboard = right. The picture at the start of this thread featured a view of the right / starboard fin.
