RAF Mildenhall to close. Lakenheath to get F-35 by 2020
Re: RAF Mildenhall to close. Lakenheath to get F-35 by 2020
It was announced on BBC local tv this morning that the closure of RAF Mildenhall has been delayed by at least nine years. Great! Not sure where that leaves the actual date, but very good news for FC'ers!

Official date is 2027 but word is 2029 is now the expected date.

Marshalls going to Scampton would help HHA not having to relocate.
Stand by unlikely to be Wyton too much cost to upgrade the runway and taxiways whilst Scampton has been reasonably maintained.

You seriously think the whole Marshall’s workforce will sell up home and move to Lincolnshire?Ghost from above wrote: ↑Sun Jun 23, 2019 8:40 pmMarshalls going to Scampton would help HHA not having to relocate.

Just comparing rough size by size as Mildenhall would be to big for Marshalls on there own

They wouldn't, necessarily, need to take the whole of Mildenhall and all the buildings? and it would then mean it still was commutable without upheaval of the whole workforce and the logistics.Ghost from above wrote: ↑Sun Jun 23, 2019 9:36 pmJust comparing rough size by size as Mildenhall would be to big for Marshalls on there own

Mildenhall, is NOT on the shortlist for MCE relocation, the three options are Cranfield, Duxford or Wyton. Cranfield being the obvious candidate, despite not being in Cambridgeshire!Agent K wrote: ↑Mon Jun 24, 2019 7:30 amThey wouldn't, necessarily, need to take the whole of Mildenhall and all the buildings? and it would then mean it still was commutable without upheaval of the whole workforce and the logistics.Ghost from above wrote: ↑Sun Jun 23, 2019 9:36 pmJust comparing rough size by size as Mildenhall would be to big for Marshalls on there own
The reason why MH never made the shortlist is either because the USAF intend to keep it or its already earmarked for housing. The former hopefully.

Here's an update on "The Hall" (as we called it long ago during my spotting days!).
At the Air & Space Power Conference in London today, I asked USAFE commander General Harrigan what the latest closure date was.
His reply: 2027

Regarding Mildenhall not being of interest to Marshalls.... isnt the major issue the US 2 pin 110volt electrical system?
Re: RAF Mildenhall to close. Lakenheath to get F-35 by 2020
Yes That's why the plan to move Harriers from Cottesmore and Wittering in the mid 90s to.....
Bentwaters and Woodbridge went down the toilet

It doesn't matter who takes on the site, the electrical infrastructure will need replacing probably from the point of connection to the distribution network.
Re: RAF Mildenhall to close. Lakenheath to get F-35 by 2020
Back in the 90s it may have been an issue regarding the 2 pin 110v electrics but this has since been replaced by the UK standard so no that isn't a problem.

On Friday (19th) evening on BBC Local News programme for Gloucestershire while reporting on Friday's RIAT, they spoke to, I believe, the Base Commander who said that the Rivet Joint move from Mildenhall to Fairford is happening. He didn't mention the date but stated that $962 million was being spend on the infrastructure to support the Rivet Joints and there would be an increase of just under 1000 military personnel moving to the base. There would also around 1200 family members moving there too which will bring an economic boost to Fairford town and the local area.UKdragon wrote: ↑Thu Jul 18, 2019 8:49 pmHere's an update on "The Hall" (as we called it long ago during my spotting days!).

Sheesh, a billion USD to support 3 jets max. Plus all the money going into Spang and RS... I wonder whether anybody has shared the business case for this with Trump yet?
Edit: Actually Tornado, that cant be right. You sure he didn't say 96.2 million?

It may have been, I can't remember, my memory's not what it use to be!! I've triedto find the news report but without success. I'll try and find it when I get home after RIAT.

Budget is up to about 200 million ( plus extra for the DABS and new bomb dumps etc ) at last count, press releases to us here in fairford state that it’s now up to 3500 extra people , including personal and family
Re: RAF Mildenhall to close. Lakenheath to get F-35 by 2020
Is it true that Fairford's funds for Rivet Joint related work has been reallocated to their home base,Offort, to repair recent base damage?
