RAF Squadron Crests

Post by lhrlima » Fri Dec 12, 2014 10:56 pm

Does anybody know why some Squadron Crests, notably 1 & 6 at the moment, have a white background as opposed to the usual black?
Thanks in advance,
Steve.

Sorry, my original post may have been a little vague! I'm referring to the embroidered crest usually worn on the right arm of the flying suit.
Most crests are on a black background, but 1 and 6 squadrons and at one time 111, have them on a white background.
Hope this clarifies my question.

Steve.

I suspect it is all to do with Heraldry, which is a fascinating subject in itself, at least to me. There is the Royal Air Force Heraldry Trust who would be able to answer your question I am sure
http://www.griffon.clara.net/rafh/sqns.htm or http://www.griffon.clara.net/rafh/heraldry.htm
Failing that the College of Arms http://www.college-of-arms.gov.uk/
If you manage to answer your own question would you post the results here please?

I think he means the material surrounding the patch, eg:

As far as I recall(getting older now and memory not so good) . . I think you might find that 1, 3, 4, 6, 54 and 111 Squadrons (I think) were attending at the Royal Pageant and all crews wore white flying suits - they got special badges made on white and were allowed to continue wearing white RAF Crests - not sure if it is true or hearsay.

I wish I could answer your question. However, can I say that the wide use of the word 'Crest' in relation to RAF BADGES is incorrect. The correct word is Badge.
