Re: TV ........Guy Martins Spitfire
Must agree I like his programs and this was good with the two Daughters coming back after 74yrs
Re: TV ........Guy Martins Spitfire
Watched it & enjoyed the program.
Was great how they linked in the footage of yesteryear along with the recollections from those that were there.
The bit where he was firing the machine gun was an eye opener, the inital hole was tiny compared to the carnage & the exit holes.

It's N3200 which crashed on the beach at Sangatte, 2 days later than P9374 which went down in similar circumstances at Calais and restored at Duxford by the same firm.paullangford wrote:..........Think it might be the Duxford Spit dug out of the beach at Dunkirk........niceAndy_99 wrote:Agree I've watched a number of the programs he's done & all were pretty top notch.1marshn30 wrote:Well worth the watch Guy is atop bloke and passionate about what he does
Possibly now the oldest flying Spitfire.

Or the newest even as not much of the original appeared to be used............

Re: TV ........Guy Martins Spitfire
Have to admit I enjoyed it, but there were a couple of bits that I didn't agree with, IMHO.
First was the fact that they kept insisting that they were restoring an old Mk1 that went down at Dunkirk when in fact they are actually just building a new Mk 1 Spitfire from scratch, so there is absolutely no way in gods green acre that they can claim it's the oldest flying Spit in existence. (Not one piece of it came from the original)
Secondly was the narrator referred to a 'lathe' by something totally stupid like a 'rotary milling machine ' or something equally daft! (Bit pedantic I know, but I just found it daft!

Re: TV ........Guy Martins Spitfire
It wasn't a lathe it was an outside diameter surface grinder and the narrator called it a surface grinder.
Re: TV ........Guy Martins Spitfire
Apparently all they need is the original constructor's plate to do a "rebuild", I agree with you - it's basically a brand-new aircraft !beefsteak wrote:

There's a Mustang kicking about in the USA somewhere that's been completely "rebuilt" 5(?) times and has been involved in 2 fatal crashes - work that one out.

Re: TV ........Guy Martins Spitfire
New build or rebuild it was a very interesting and well put together programme and Guy Martin's enthusiasm was evident in his presentation
Must have been good I didn't succumb to Morpheus once throughout the programme

I enjoyed the programme, especially the focus on the people who built these aircraft in the first place, the people who restore/ rebuild them now, and the groundcrew of that time who pulled off miracles to keep them fighting.
It's not all about the pilots.......who we're amazing obviously.
I'll keep it.....and watch it for inspiration in the future.

A bit like "Trig's brush"
Cracking programme, thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it.

Re: TV ........Guy Martins Spitfire
The fuselage , wings, engine, electrics, controls, etc. are all brand new and if they had all been replaced over the last 70 odd years had this Spit had survived the war, there would be no question that this was the same aircraft.
It just happens that it has been done in a shorter period.
The result is that one more Spitfire is in the air due to the focus on the pieces of N3200 wrecked on the Dunkirk beach.
That can't be bad.

Re: TV ........Guy Martins Spitfire
Really enjoyed the show and Guy Martin was an excellent presenter. However, I do get tired when every show about WW2 wastes time explaining historical events eg. the need for the Dunkirk evacuation. I'd rather see more about the actual restoration. Having said that it was nothing like Channel 5 documentaries, which often waste most of the programme talking about how the war started! Maybe it's me just being an old fart!

Agree 1 more spit back into the air is always a top resultTailplane wrote:The fuselage , wings, engine, electrics, controls, etc. are all brand new and if they had all been replaced over the last 70 odd years had this Spit had survived the war, there would be no question that this was the same aircraft.

Re: TV ........Guy Martins Spitfire
Not everyone is as aware or clued up about WWII as some of us on here may be. It has to be appreciated that these programmes are aimed at the general populace rather than military or aviation enthusiasts such as my or your self. They are, therefore, always going to repeat info that we have seen many times before simply because we watch as many of these documentaries as we can, whereas the average person on the street will only perhaps watch one or two in a long period of time.chrisfg1 wrote:Really enjoyed the show and Guy Martin was an excellent presenter. As with yourself though I thoroughly enjoyed the programme, especially his enthusiasm!

I didn't know that, thanks, as they say. "Every days a schoolday"
