Gents,
The better image that has a clearly visible GR3 is a CGI/artist mock up and is not a real photo. It was done to demonstrate (arranged or made by Nick Pope I believe) what the now released image looked like prior to it now being in the public domain. Nick Pope saw it during his time with the MoD and the angles look pretty close despite some extra details being added. The recognizable GR3 in that image is purely because they had concluded that the silhouette in the image(s) was a Harrier when the images were with the MoD. The more I look at the real image, the more that looks like a Hunter rather than a Harrier, despite how unlikely that type is in the scenario as recorded. At the time I believe UK military use of the Hunter was down to just FRADU and 237 OCU at Lossiemouth, neither unit you would expect to be involved in any covert test flight or a interception of a true unknown target. A chance encounter whilst on routine tasking with the crew coming back multiple times to look I can understand - similar to the Lakenheath F-15 incident in 2007. However, the date and time given - assuming accurate - is not long before sunset on a Saturday evening, strange time for routine fast jet training by Hunters or Harriers. As is all too frequent with these cases, and this comes from somebody who has followed the UFO subject for over 30 years and been involved in a couple of investigations, the more information and evidence, the more questions and aspects of the case that don't make sense.

I happened to be in the area during this time staying for a week in Prestwwick. I can clearly recall an article in the local paper where a local resident in the area had been woken up with a loud noise which she described as a sound like the "sky was ripping apart" that doesn't sound like a description of an F117.

Further to the theory that the UFO is actually the image of a rock, island or mountain reflected in a nearby loch, it is worth pointing out that one of the nearest lochs to Calvine is called Loch Con.
