Ex AGILE STANCE
Re: Ex AGILE STANCE
Come on guys do you really think in this day and age of organisations being risk averse and health and safety the RAF would even consider landing an aircraft on a public road,
wishful thinking by somebody who in my opinion should know better than to make such a comment in the first place
this entire exercise seems to be a throw back to an other time , yet another example of the UK believing in the past rather than looking to the future, surely nobody really believes Russia or any other state for that matter would be looking to launch an attack on the UK, or Europe etc
this entire thread is fanciful wishful thinking,
at least its moved to the correct place on the board

Anyone recall multi-headed rockets? I would aim for the current bases and lob in another dozen rockets programmed for possible dispersal sites. That should do the job with the number of aircraft at our disposal.
A less expense attack would be three trucks through various crash gates at each base…

Re: Ex AGILE STANCE
From a strategic perspective I'd say 'no notice scatter drills' would still make eminent sense today ( to selected operational civil & mil airfields , not highways ).
Interestingly the Chief of the Defence Staff's recent speech to the International Institute of Strategic Studies meeting on ' defence innovation' gives a highly relevant wider context to 'Agile Stance' type thinking https://www.wired-gov.net/wg/news.nsf/a ... 21500?open . Confusingly however I see its dated 1 April 2021 !

yes please
In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.
Re: Ex AGILE STANCE
Any of the disused East Anglian airfields still got suitable runways? Bentwaters, Sculthorpe?
I guess it’s too much to ask that there’s anywhere near East Cheshire with a remotely suitable stretch of concrete! The most jet-barren place in England. Awful.

Re: Ex AGILE STANCE
Given this weeks situation at Brize, practicing operating from other bases from time to time looks like a very good idea. Additionally, having all your eggs in one basket e.g. all your tankers and heavy transport in one location, isn't a good idea, although it does save money.
Re: Ex AGILE STANCE
Sculthorpe’s runway good condition Mildenhall’s 352nd sow use it a lot seen the herk’s and ospreys on the ground but not much in the way of infrastructure tower and fire station still standing Mildenhall fire truck was there the last time I visited by the tower.

The scenery and the country pubs are pretty good though! And you can get to most interesting places (Mildenhall, Yeovilton, etc) within 3 - 3 1/2 hours, which is not TOO excessive. Sure I'd like to live a bit nearer an active base, is Shawbury not exciting enough for you?

North Weald still has a decent runway, and is still used by jets on a regular basis. Already has police onsite (helicopter base) which is handy, and a couple of cafes onsite. Hell, I would even buy the crew a tea and sticky bun to sweeten the deal ( as long as they are single seaters, I am not made of money)

Re: Ex AGILE STANCE
I recall similar dispersals with the VC10 feet in the mid-80s during exercise periods.
The crew would launch with some techies and movers on board and would go to destinations such as Prestwick, Wittering, Wildenrath and Jersey from memory.
as a young LAC I was fortunate to be selected for one such exercise task and after taking the shift shopping list (in case Wildenrath was the destination and duty-free could be purchased), we taxied to the end of the runway, began to rotate, and no sooner had the engines revved up they were cut.
we taxied to the end of the runway, across to the far side of the airfield and promptly parked up on Bay 50 (now bay 35) and sat there for 6 hours later taxi-ing back to the waterfront, gutted lol.
I can't recall them ever actually dispersing again after that, I do remember one-time loading bomb pallets to the VC10 for it to taxi round the airfield and park back up only to be offloaded almost straight away. As you can imagine morale was low that day but then who said TACEVAL should be fun

Brize Norton have been doing an excellent job operating away from home base.
The pace of operations into Kabal has been relentless, very little coverage on the forum (operational reasons) but FR24 tracking has been open.
Massive well done to the guy and gals down south for keeping the air bridge running.
Hope they get the recognition they deserve when time allows.
