With all the sonic boom testing that's been going on at NASA, it must be an old aircraft that is creating the boom. :ninja:

http://www.nasa.gov/aero/centers_tackle_sonic_boom.html

I did hear that sonic booms can travel for an additional 120 miles, bouncing off the atmosphere once the aircraft drops below mach 1. Maybe these were caused by a test recon aircraft travelling over the Atlantic towards the Russian "fleet" that were off the south coast at the time?

What is annoying me is the Youtube video that claims it isthe sound of the bangs which clearly sounds like fireworks, the video is now being used by the media saying this was a recording of the bangs heard all over the UK that night.

But the video says it was taken in Croydon....If people read the first article of the loud bangs in the Daily Mail then it says the only explanation the police have is that Croydon had a large firework display that night!! So that video is not the sound of the 'bangs' heard all over the UK.. But people still believe it :grr:

Ah yes - Mistpouffers - that's it in a nutshell!

I was in the garden on Saturday night - and fireworks were being let off in Cardiff. It goes on for weeks and months starting in September these days - with predictable peaks on Halloween, Nov 5th, Diwali and New Years Eve. I am not in the least suprised that if you throw the question out there "did you hear loud bangs tonight..." then lots of people across the UK would say "yes, yes, how extraordinary!" and it must all add up to something...when in fact...

I note @virtualastro has 102,000 followers these days and he does seem, well, excitable....

A rare - and large - bolide meteor breaking up could cause sonic booms over a wide area but there were no matching visual observations or GRAVES Radar data. You wouldn't miss that.

Anyhow, I'm sure it was fireworks!

In all seriousness though, it's kind of interesting to see this how these sort of conspiracy theories are born, accelerated by social media, and ultimately will be accepted into the 'dreamland resort' canon. Just have a look at the thread on Above Top Secret and you'll see exactly what I mean. The rumour, fed by the media, taken in by the tin foil hat brigade, jumbled up and distorted in all sorts of ways, mixed up with clear conjecture and myth (for example the poster who hijacked the ATS thread to explain how she saw bright lights and helicopters flying over her house - MUST BE ALIENZ). It all becomes self a reinforcing fiction very fast.

Right now anyone could post any audio recording on youtube, and claim it was the 'noises'. Take some real recordings of sonic booms / pulse jets / something exotic, mix it up with some background noise etc, and post it. Tweet wildly about it, get in the DM, who will lap it up, rinse and repeat.

I can tell you if I worked for the 'powers that be' I'd be well aware of the way this works, and fly a few mysterious supersonic sorties at night, get the nutters all worked up and let the conspiracy theorists go wild - just say nothing, or try and blame it on something that could easily be disproven (how about a fireworks display). Because it's not like anyone's got the budget to have any real black projects, and we gotta scare the ruskies some how ;)

I'm not saying it wasn't a fireworks display, I'm just saying it would be a good way to cause a bit of excitement if that's what you wanted to do.

Well I think I have just put all those people who commented on that video of the 'loud bangs' in Croydon straight, some of those comments are amusing and now I think I have been the party pooper  :pop:

Tuesday 5.45pm; For the last twenty minutes, there's been a lot of military jet noise over Peterborough. Anything related to the bangs from the other night

We had a lot of noise here around the same time, a quick look out of the window proved it to be the inbred inbreeds a few doors away that had just probably blown their weekly giros on cheap discounted fireworks (after emptying the shelves of White Lightning) that the corner shop was trying to get rid of after Bonfire night.

I presume that this was going-on all over the UK, I was in several shops last week that were still selling fireworks (probably illegally).

There were reports of the noises in Denmark and elswhere in Europe on Saurday too, then again in Australia and New Zealand during yesterday, my money is on it being a high altitude, high speed 'Black' jet.

Whoop Whoop the old Doughnuts on a rope picture has surfaced.

Got a feeling this one will run & run in the daily fail.

Now we can all fuel the rumours by posting random lights photo's taken from Boscombe etc....

Hey maybe it's actually going to be stationed at Fairford & that's why it's going to be reactivated :ninja:

Just noticed it's on the BBC news homepage now.

Not read the article yet though.

The only thing sinister or suspect at Boscombe is the food in the Airman's Mess.
